Anyone Recommend some Epic Music? · 5:29am Feb 6th, 2013
I really love telling long, epic stories (she says, ironically, on an account that has nothing by love stories...) and while I'm not working on any epic stories right now, it would be nice to have a playlist for such a story ^_^
I have a friend I've had since grade school, and she is the only friend in real life that is also a writer, like me. Likewise, I am also her only writer friend. And so every once in a while we just GET each other in some aspects of life. Like her collection of epic music. She has a very large collection she's gleaned over the years that have inspired so many scenes in her story. I, unfortunately, have no such collection, and she's never made me a CD - she promises, it just never happens....I do the same to her >_<. Ah, friendship! Friendship is Broken Promises ^_^;
My point of mentioning this is that every once in a while I just want to listen to epic music while writing an epic scene. Or maybe be inspired by a piece of music. As I mentioned in my Author's Note for Chocolate Covered Grapes, it was inspired by a verse of a song, and just kind of took off from there. That note made for some song recommendations that I played over and over again while writing the next scenes. It helped with the whole "burn out" issue.
Anyways! I can't really describe my taste in music - I just like what I like - and I was listening to my playlist while doing some editing and I realized how few Epic Music selections I have. I suppose I lean towards indie/alternative kind of music, but at the end of the day, I like what I like ^_^; And when I say epic music, it doesn't have to be like uber climactic music that you would hear during a fighting scene in a movie. I can also just be very melodic, or grand flourishes or...I don't know, I'm not a music person, heh.
SO! Music recommendations?
....this may also be a contrived way of avoiding editing...yet again.
If, you want epic music, the best recommendation I can give is Snow Patrol's "The Lightning Strike"
16.3 minutes long, and worth every second. The song itself is a goddman epic.
Here!
Kashmir by Led Zeppelin, the pinnacle of their songwriting
Carmina Burana, Rapsody of Fire, Baldur's Gate OST
Oh my goodness, typing this I realized that I have the worst taste in music. Feel free to laugh at me or ignore me.
I can't think of much epic indie/alternative, but I can tell you what's on my list:
Musical theater has the whole epic thing down. This is the Moment from Jeckyll and Hyde, Astonishing from Little Women, Defying Gravity from Wicked, Into Fire from The Scarlet Pimpernel, and a million others. There's more or less an epic song in every show not set in the modern day.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra's non Christmas albums- Beethoven's Last Night and Night Castle. A mix of epic electric arrangements of classical music and original songs that sound like. . . well, musical theater.
From back in my goth days, there's the Cruxshadow song Sophia.
And finally, Meatloaf, Bonnie Tyler, and pretty much anything written or produced by Jim Steinman (which is most Meatloaf and Bonnie Tyler songs.)
I would recommend "Roundabout " by Yes, a very good band with a very upbeat yet mellow sound! Or if your lookin for something to pump you up i would say "Wind (Fang) " from the game Asura 's wrath with a lone desprado sound.
I don't really know how to judge epicness, but I think this song is pretty good.
Check out Stand Up and Fight by Turisas. It's a damn decent metal song that souds like it should be to a gigantic epic battle. One of my favorites!
Epic Playlist
Here, this is a playlist put together by Yindragon. If you look to the right of the video, you can see there are 200 videos. If you don't like the one playing, skip to the next one. Rinse and repeat. Hope this helps.

Thank you all ^_^ I felt weird not answering back for all the music suggestions, but weird answering them individually.
Except for you, Bookplayer. I'm a TOTAL musical nut ^_^; Though the only on in the list I knew was Defying Gravity, I DO love Sutton Foster, and hadn't heard the Little Women one.
Thanks all! And anyone else have any, feel free to add to the list ^_~

I've actually mentioned the Little Woman one on my blog a few times, because it always reminds me of Dash.
Just wanted to add that. Glad you liked it!
803468 *listens to it again* IT REALLY DOES FIT DASH!!!!!
Musical songs are good for that, usually ^_^
Does the song need words?
806202 Nope! I'm actually quite fond of instrumental songs!
>>Callisto Then try Zelda songs. I don't know if you've played the games, but they have great songs. Just don't get overwhelmed by the amount of songs there are....
>>BronyNeumo That's even longer than my favorite song!
806534 Oh, yes, I'm very aware of Zelda songs. I'm more of a "Final Fantasy" song kinda girl, but Zelda has some very nice music.
>>Callisto What about Eine Kleine Nachtmusik? Or One Night in Bangkok?

I like that type of music for reading, youtube is not best quality as it contains lot of transients and high frequency content that simply gets lost but at least you can hear what it is.
Epic music?
Be Patient (Still) - Smidi

Palladio - dunno which version this is

First one makes you cry of happiness and second one makes watching paint dry feel epic.
Cheers!
