Welp, So Much for Sticking to Canon · 9:08pm Jan 21st, 2013

Warning: Contains spoilers for Keep Calm and Flutter On

I'm not terribly surprised that Coming Back has broken the show's canon. Preplanning began before Season 3 started and I was gonna shove as much of it into CB where it fit as I could as the season progressed. I figured it would be a matter of time before something canon so irrevocably broke with the storyline that I'd be flying into alternate universe territory, and Keep Calm and Flutter On has done so. If nothing else, Discord gallivanting around Equestria instead of locked up tight (or not so tight) on the Other Side is a coffin-nail enough.

So, as far as readers need be concerned, Keep Calm and Flutter On never happened in Coming Back's continuity. Perhaps Princess Celestia had thought about attempting a reformation of the guy and decided against it at the last minute out of fear. Maybe further developments in Season Three will shine further light on changes between Coming Back's continuity and canon. If when Season 3 ends there is enough material for me to weave a good yarn describing the continuity break, I'll write an appendix detailing the changes. Since the start I've been vague on when all of this is taking place, and who knows? Maybe Coming Back is a reality that happens in a not-so-distant future Equestria where the release and befriending of Discord was the lynch-pin that caused so much to happen.

I must say, I'm more intrigued by the possible wrinkles I can introduce than disappointed.

Keep Calm and Pony On. Bats out.

Coming from a Harry Potter fandom, I can accept the idea of "Before etc. .."

Just saying you dont need to follow everything that is true to the show.

Especially after the "maybe yes or maybe not" bomb that is the season finale

don't worry about sticking t the show so much you've done great so keep going and stop worrying so much

Oh I'm not worried, far from it. Having a break with continuity's kind of exciting. It means maybe making it a full-fledged Alternate Universe, where events from the canon that didn't happen had a calamitous effect that altered the course of events in unforeseen ways. If I was trying to write something that perfectly fit into the show's continuity, I'd have gone an entirely different direction. Mostly I've been keeping a mindful eye in order to pick when exactly all this started happening. Conceivably, the scouting bull arrived just before Princess Celestia decided to see about releasing Discord, but then again maybe not. We shall see, as it were.

This would be disappointing if I was trying to write something that fit snugly into the show like it was a series of episodes. But, if I was doing that, I probably wouldn't have slashed up RD's face like some sort of deranged Sweeney Todd.

Well, you could always have him relapse and have him refrozen again, if need be.
