In the original publication of chapter 4, I implied that there is a life-giving connection between all things in the pony universe and identified these links as Leylines. I had assumed that they were some kind of mystical or magical connecting force. Upon further research, I found that that term was not accurate. The term Leylines refers to hypothetical alignments between a number of places of geographical interest. I've since revised that statement. To help dispel your confusion, this is the idea I wanted to convey:
There is a web of magical links connecting all things within the pony universe. This magical web of life is known and natural to the inhabitants of that world. It is, after all, the well from which all magical abilities are suppose to spring from. Thus, when Celestia and Luna find a completely different, partially severed, yet also magical tie within their subjects, they are naturally concerned and go to investigate it.
