Question for the musicians and podcasters · 10:25am February 19th

I'm doing a music qualification and part of that is actually needing to compose something and record it. The thing I'm planning to do is an orchestral piece but of course I don't have a whole orchestra in my house so I'm going to need to do it digitally.

I've got a midi keyboard already that someone gifted to me a while ago and I think I know which software I'm going to use. However, the one thing I don't have is an audio interface or sound card, and from what I've heard, my laptop on its own won't have the processing power to do what it needs to do without one. I googled "best free audio interface" and most of the options are coming up at hundreds of pounds, which is a lot of money for someone who's trying to save up for driving lessons as well. So I'm just wondering if there are any options that anyone would recommend.

I don't necessarily need the *best* equipment for the price range, but I don't want to buy the cheapest unbranded one on eBay and hope that it will have all the capabilities that I need. Basically:

  • what are my options for a sound card with 2 XLR inputs;
  • what other specs should I pay attention to; and
  • what is actually available to me for less than £100?

If anyone out there can give me advice or point me in the right direction, I'd really be grateful for it.

Enjoy your day, wherever you are,

~ Angel
