What’s Your Favorite Axtara Moment? · 8:29pm Nov 16th, 2023

What’s your favorite Axtara – Banking and Finance moment?

I figured I’d ask, since I’m plugging away at the sequel over here (Magic and Mayhem is moving towards release with steady steps!) and don’t have much to tease yet (look for that next week). So again, what was your favorite moment from Axtara’s first outing?

For me? I’d have to say one of my favorite scenes is when Axtara and Mia go up atop the ruin behind the manor overlooking Elnacier, and Mia talks about the responsibilities of being a princess and the aims (and considerations) she has for her own future. It’s a good scene, and one of my favorites in the entire book, showing off Mia and Axtara’s friendship, but also showing off how dedicated and forward-thinking both of them are. That, and in my opinion we don’t have nearly enough books with princesses in them where the princess actually does princess things (instead of just adventuring and partying), so Mia’s dedication to and acknowledgement of her many responsibilities as a ruler to her people, as well as her concern for how to live up to those duties makes for a very memorable moment in my mind.

But what about you? What was your favorite moment in Axtara – Banking and Finance? And what are you hoping to see in Magic and Mayhem?

With that, I should get back to it. See you Monday!

I have fond memories of Mia's sister meeting Axtara for the first time and asking if she can ride her. As for a favorite scene, I think the climax where Axtara negotiates with Fendall to have him leave Mia instead of kidnapping her. Axtara is a dragon, so the assumption was she'd react like a dragon and attack, breath fire and chase. It'd be an action scene in any other fantasy novel. But being a dragon has never been her defining trait, she's a banker.
Instead she negotiates, thinks and creates a verbal contract to get Fendall to leave without harming anyone. It doesn't work, but it is a defining moment for her. As more than a dragon, a stereotype. It was a final example of who Axtara was, exactly who she'd been telling everyone she was since the beginning and not what everyone assumed she was
. In many fantasy stories, and especially D&D, characters are defined by race and the tropes associated. Axtara flies in the face of that, and to me much more memorable for it.

I had to think about it for a bit, as it's been a hot minute since I read Axtara - Banking and Finance. With how much stuff I read on a daily basis, it's easy to lose track. But at this point I think my favorite scene was the introduction of Mia. Her utter confusion at how, no, she doesn't need to slay the dragon was highly entertaining and a great start to what would become a beautiful friendship.

Ooh, good pick! Axtara really does show what kind of being she is in that finale, doesn't she!

I too really enjoy that scene. Especially Mia's "Crap, my parents are going to be furious" moment.
