I tried a new food today. · 12:25am Oct 23rd, 2023

Well, to anyone paying any attention to my blogs for the past month, I've been spending quite a bit of time playing Freedom Planets 1 and 2, which are inspired by East Asian mythology.

One Philippine dish that featured in the extended backstory of the second game was siopao (pronounced sho-pow), otherwise known as steamed pork buns.

And after weeks of looking for a nearby restaurant that made authentic ones, I finally got to try some downtown today!

Let me know the last time a game, show, or movie inspired you to try a new food.

I wish I could enjoy food like that, but everywhere around here is too quick to kick quality to the curb and make garbage food.

Those do look nice tho.

As for being enticed by media? No.

I'm sure there was one that at least got me curious, but I couldn't remember for the life of me. But I will stay that I remember a few streams years ago of Final Fantasy XV, maybe Breath of the Wild, and maybe one other game where the food looked realistic enough to make the streamer hungry.

I'm pretty sure Digimon made me try sushi for the first time (it was the first anime I watched back then), but I was too young to have a taste for raw fish. Didn't enjoy it until I was an adult.

Hey siopao I remember having those when I was a kid my mom always makes those

I do love me some steamed dumplings/buns. There's a Phillipine food truck floating around Cookeville TN that makes a mean batch of Siomai. And some really good lumpia.

Oohh. No, i don't think a show has ever made me try something.

How were they? Good, I assume.

Absolutely! Watching the original Urusei Yatsura. The boys in it are always going out for "beef bowl." Wanted to give it a try but none of the Japanese restaurants around here had it so found a recipe online. It's one of our favorite meals now! No idea how authentic what I make is, but it's really good. A new restaurant opened recently that DOES have it so going to try it there sometime.

Wondering if it's something that either fell out of style or was just a fav of the UY creator (her name escapes me atm) since I don't seem to hear of it in more recent Japanese media. Or maybe it's just more often referred to by it's Japanese name which I can't remember offhand. My memory sucks.

They were. They didn't come with anything at the restaurant, so I had one, in addition to a plate of beef lo mein. Took the other two home, reheated them for dinner, and were delicious with barbecue sauce (what isn't?).

Not bad for $9.

Barbecue sauce? I don't like it, it gives me a bit of acidity (is that the word?), but I'm sure it tasted great for you :pinkiehappy:

What isn't?

Broccoli?

Broccoli is amazing in lo mein, cheddar soup, and a baked potato.

Hm, I'll try broccoli in that because even though I hate it I still have to eat it.

Glad you managed to get some before a fish lady snags them all for herself!

I would have accepted one if it were placed on my head, true.
