This Week In Lines That Need To Be Read By Keith David Right Now · 1:13am Sep 29th, 2023
From Dynamite Comics' Gargoyles miniseries (only three issues to go until it wraps up and we find out if we're getting another or an ongoing) by series co-creator Greg Weisman. Picking up after the season 2 finale and Slave Labour Graphics' previous "Clan-Building" series, the Gargoyles existence has been publicly exposed to a stunned human race. Goliath is captured by the NYPD gargoyles task force (ironically headed by human ally Matt Bluestone) and held at Rikers Island while a court struggles to arrange a hearing to determine if gargoyles can be considered sentient, and maybe also figure out where the hell to go from here.
Weisman and artist George Kambadais capture the feel of the show so well I've had Carl Johnson's score playing in my head while reading. A nice bit of continuity: Margo Yale, the bigoted assistant DA putting Goliath through the ringer, is the first human mugging victim he saved in the modern era during the Awakening pilot movie.
And sticking to my personal Weisman brand, here's a copy of Religious Studies 101: A Handful of Thorns, or The Spectacular Spider-Man Meets Gargoyles, written by Greg for the final Gathering of Gargoyles fan convention and with a surprising number of the parts read live by their original actors. That's right, Keith David and Josh Keaton in the same room. What might have been, eh?
I never got into the Gargoyles series (mostly because we didn't get the Disney Channel when it was airing.) Still, this is exquisite writing... though Ms. Yale's question at the end is less an argument against gargoyles having sapient rights and more one against humans getting them.

Depending on what Lex Luthor wannabe is responsible for this kangaroo court, that might be considered a win too...
