Having fun by taking silly cartoon ponies way too seriously.

The Glossary and Illustrations Chapter is Live!

I decided to append the glossary to the end of the story. Turns out it's longer than any of the chapters. :twilightoops:

It will remain the last chapter even as new chapters come out. As I recall, that created some issues with quoting comments or something like that in The Skyla Pseudonym, so be aware of that if you want to comment on the glossary itself.

    Enjoy!

    The Shape of the Ship

Still working on the glossary and diagrams. It turned out to be a much bigger job than I'd anticipated, what with having to get the 3D model into much better shape than the "noodling around" stage it's been in for years. The ability to produce illustrations specific to fantasy/steampunkish airship equipment will be worth it, I think. I might as well include other terms pertinent to the story,

Do I have Horrible Timing, or What?

I’m trying to spin a fun little air-pirate fantasy here, and on the day the chapter where my characters have a little “debate” about swordplay releases, some lunatic with a katana goes on a murderous rampage in London. In order to keep the comment section of the chapter (mostly) free of things unrelated to pretty pastel ponies, I'm directing people to this post, where they can discuss, debate, or

    Captain on Deck!

Captain Blackmane visits Surprise, and finds her very familiar.

(Nebula's plan, despite lacking a foremast, is very close to Surprise's.)

Very Nice, She Says... · 6:07pm Sep 9th, 2023

Twilight may be unimpressed by palaces, but this place sure knocked my socks off!

when I see something like this
I always think of Assassin's Creed
...I'm damaged goods :twilightsheepish:

That has some serious "I have money and need to let everyone know that I have it" vibes.

Yes, Flamboyant Gothic is more Trixie's style.

Assassin's Creed ruined Venice for me! :rainbowlaugh:

:trixieshiftright: Fair.

Is it like freshly pressure washed or sandblasted and they left that one dormer black and unwashed to demonstrate the difference?

Whenever I read Assassin's Creed I think of the silly movie with the smoking ball of doom, the daughter who didn't seem to care all that much that assassins were about to snuff her father, and how secretive, professional assassins would willingly get crippled and marked for life by having a finger amputated! Why not cow bell earrings while you're at it? Assassin's Creed, putting the ass in assassin! :rainbowlaugh:

No, that's pretty much the original limestone (and restorations) AFAIK. Bourges was never industrialized enough to produce the coal smoke that stained a lot of medieval Europe black. The dormers* are slate shingled on the sides, sheathed in lead on the outer surface, and what stone is showing is stained; possibly from the lead. You can see the streak of lead washed from the roof on the left side of the tower.

* There are two of them, one is out of shot.

Lead sheathed, how strange. On closer look I can see several differences in the detail between the dark dormer and the white one to the left of the tower, such as the motif below the window and the depth of the frame holding the window panes. Why sheath some of the dormers in lead? Is it to keep the vampires from getting out?

We just walked by there on our way back to the flat, and the outside dormers are the same. But I could see (even at night, 'cause it's way lit up, and I was looking more carefully) that even though they echo the stone work around them, those dormers are carved out of wood! Makes sense, because they're perched on the roof trusses, and not part of the stone wall. I've seen old woodwork elsewhere sheathed in lead, particularly where water is going to run or puddle on it. I've even seen stone gargoyles throats lined with it to prevent wear, so that must be the reason.

Wood! Thanks for the insight.
