Axtara Soars, and We’ve Got a Sale · 7:31pm Jun 29th, 2023
Hey folks! Just the usual weekly heads-up on what’s going on here behind the desk. Most of which you already know about, but hey, that’s how updates on progress work!
Axtara – Magic and Mayhem is moving along at a nice clip. It’s now 33,000 words in, and that’s before me getting to work today. The story is starting to click along at a good pace, Axtara’s doing banking things, pieces are moving in the background, and the big … Well, that’d be saying too much. Let’s just leave it at “Things are flowing well” and call it good.
Well, almost. I did want to share this fun little tidbit from the draft. Remember Wilfor, one of Vern’s apprentices in the courier business? Well, he’s been busy doing his job, as we can see here. Take a look!
“All right,” Axtara said as she found the page dedicated to Wilfor, his carefully scrawled name at the top. “For one prompt delivery of four letters, one Delarian dim.” She dipped her scribing claw into the inkwell, gave it a shake to dislodge the extra droplets, and then quite carefully and dutifully noted the deposit of a single dim into his growing account. Then she wiped her claw carefully clean and recapped the inkwell.
“Which brings your total …” She flipped the ledger around, tapping the final tally so that Wilfor would see it. “To fifty-nine dims.”
“Wow,” Wilfor exclaimed, his eyes wide. “That’s a lot of money.” Then he paused, looking confused. “I don’t know what I’ll do with it.”
I don’t know. I just thought it was cute. Did you think I was going to post spoilers here?

(Personally, I would find it interesting for Axtara to be wrestling with her inner (and outer dragon) when Wilfor comes to make a withdrawal for that, and she has to (eventually, after much wrestling) determine that the pleasant memory of being a child and feeding birds is worth far more throughout his life than mere metal, no matter how much it brings in return. Possibly, she can even accompany him.)
Nice, I recently got time to read the first Axtara book. Lots of fun.

I think we'll see less instinct in this vein from Axtara, since she's had a lot of time to deal with it while working for her uncle. Though I have put some thought into what Wilfor's planning on doing (compared to his older brother, who keeps spending it in attempts to woo young women).
That was a deliberate italic.
