Question of the Week #93 · 3:32am Feb 14th, 2023

Hello everyone and welcome back to the question of the week.

So, I've been trying to learn Pathfinder, since my DnD group is wanting to explore other game systems after all of WotC's shenanigans and I've been pondering what setting to present to my players. As I've been thinking about it and considering the idea of maybe doing a generic fantasy setting... That also tries to put twists on or make fun of existing fantasy tropes.

Thus we have this weeks questions:

  1. What is your favorite fantasy trope(s)?
  2. What is your favorite game, anime, cartoon, etc... That put a clever twist on that trope (or maybe another fantasy trope you like)?
  3. Is there a fantasy trope that you think could maybe use a twist?

I'm really excited to see all your answers.:pinkiehappy:

I've also been experimenting around with the idea of maybe doing an Ogres and Oubliettes (OnO) shortfic, perhaps with Marble Pie playing a character in the game. I'm not sure yet, but I figured that I can throw that out there. :rainbowlaugh:

I like the idea that Marble Pie out of game is really shy but when playing OnO her character(s) are confident and brave.

And that's the question for the week. Thank you all for coming and answering my questions. I hope that you all are enjoying these blogs.

Stay safe and have a wonderful week.

Only a handful of anime catches my attention as apparently I am an outlier in terms of "ponies are my drugs".

One of the anime that got me to watch all it's current season that has some RPG elements is "I'm a spider, so what?"

It is a fairly standard isekai and a standard fantasy magical RPG anime to boot... but the difference is that the main character is a monster spider. This spider have a language barrier when talking to humans but the humans got no time or mercy to do charades so this spider is always on the run.

Oh, and the whole class the spider was in got isekai'd too, including their teacher. Most of the class are human, elf, or otherwise. Only one is a dragon pet to one of the classmate.

This trope is interesting because there is a strong and possible bridge between monsters and people living in harmony.

This blog gives a good rundown of fantasy tropes and and subverting them.

Can't say any personal examples top the ones in the article.

My favorite is The Life of Brian and it's subversion of the Chosen One meme.

Brian doesn't want to be the chosen one. Really! He doesn't! And he can't convince people that he isn't! :rainbowlaugh:

1. A knight on a quest. A ghost ship/haunted house also rank high.
2. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. You are playing as an exiled Jedi Knight who (if you choose the light side) is on a quest to gather the Jedi councel back together to fight the Big Bad. It don't go according to plan.
3. There are so many lazy subversions of the classic tropes, it's just sad. I think a few would be better off when played straight, but with a twist, like 'Damsel in distress' or, to be more specific, 'Dragon kidnapped a princess'.

with Marble Pie playing a character in the game.

😄👍Sounds amazing!
