As you can see I am concentrating on some contests right now. I like the deadline.
Hey, y’all, I got a question, a thought exercise even, about… well not legality I guess but more etiquette?
Here’s the deal. I’ve been reading fanfics for a long time! And some of those have stuck out in my mind for years and years. So much so that I’d say I’m a fan of the fanfic itself *cough Mare Who Once Lived on the Moon cough*. And you know what I do with things that I’m a fan of? Write fanfic for them!
So would it be weird/impolite/against site rules if I posted fanfics… for other fanfics? I know there are trends where everyone jumps off one idea but eh, I don’t know, those all seem to be inspired more than directly being a fanfic of the original piece.
If I did post these they’d probably be in one big anthology thing. A collection of fanfic fanfics. Would this be a good idea or something that would make people angry at me?
Anyway, happy writing for day two! Remember that the first word is always the hardest!
I can really only speak for myself, but I would be utterly delighted if someone liked my work enough to write fanfiction of it. Isn't that how Fallout: Equestria started?
I'd say ask the writers if you want to make sure, get their permission directly. (That's also a good way to make them aware of it and maybe read it.)
I'd understand if some of them didn't like the idea. But I'd imagine most of them would be happy, or at worst indifferent.
As long as credit is properly given, I don't really see an issue.
As far as I know, most authors would be deeply flattered and/or thrilled that someone wrote fanfic of their fanfic. I say go for it.

Asking individual permission is probably a good idea. And if the author just… isn’t around anymore I guess they aren’t around to complain!

Phew, that’s what I hope!
I'mma gonna concur with the others. If you want to do it, just go for it, and while asking permission first is good, there's almost no situation where anyone would actually say no. It's the most flattering thing imaginable, after all. Same as getting fanart of one's work, or maybe even fan music.
Speaking as some ghost who, in a fandom past, wrote a fanfic based on another user's fanfic (one I never finished, but I digress), and one where I had a really good rapport with the original fanfic's author, it inarguably goes smoothly in the relationship department.
So, nothing to worry about, dear: strike with the inspiration is hot. Go for it!

Common sense says to ask, but I find it more of a pleasant surprise when someone did one of mine and only told me after.
Plus, it's not like we ask Hasbro before making fics.
