So, we're getting episodes airing out of order again, this time for the whole month of September. First up is this episode, which by the way is the first episode not to have any of the mane six, Spike, or the CMC, It's just Starlight, Trixie, and Thorax. Considering what happened the last time Starlight and Trixie were the focus of an episode (back during "All Bottled Up") things didn't go very well for them. While this episode was foreshadowed about two episodes ago, it had a lot to tackle.

Well, time to change gears and focus on the show again. We've got our first solo Twilight Sparkle episode since Season 5 and "What About Discord?" which quite frankly you'll forgive me for not wanting to remember it with how bad it was. We also have the major selling point of this marking the re-debut of Twilight's parents, Night Light and Twilight Velvet. The episode is penned by another new writer, Brittany Joe Flores, who I can't find any information on at the moment. Given the track record

This isn't a review blog (I've already done that). These are just observations I make in the context of hindsight as I rewatch S3 for the first time in years. Pretty sure I've rewatched seasons one and two in the last couple years; I think I might keep up a "four seasons ago" retrospective from now on. Well, for the next two seasons, anyway. >.>
It's later than usual, but better late than never. Anyway, going into this season is quite interesting because a lot has already been made known about it. Some episodes were even leaked without background audio, another had its ending revealed in a magazine, all 26 episodes have had their synopsis' released, and we know already that there's a Season 9 in the works. We also know that this seasons is going to attempt to be more overarching in its narrative, something that hasn't been attempted
And so we come to the first (and perhaps only) Spike episode of the season. One of the biggest details about it was leaked months in advance, and this episode was among the leaked ones. Josh Haber was already revealed as this episode's writer, but despite being story editor for the season where Spike stopped being a butt monkey, he doesn't really have a track record for Spike focus episodes. Season 8's been getting off to a strong start so far, but now we've got an episode penned by Josh Hamilton! You may remember last season that Hamilton's name was attached to duds like "Parental Glideance" (which gave us filler scenes we didn't need, instead of important scenes we did need), "Triple Threat" (which thought it could mask a "Spike Screws Up" episode with Spike being called by the map), and the episode that surpassed "The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000" as my least favorite
Yes yes, the title is definitely a surprising one for the show. Anyway, G. M. Berrow's writing this episode, and her track record for the show is... mixed to put lightly. "The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows" is the very definition of a fun episode even if there were some questionable moments towards the end, "Fluttershy Leans In" was just there for lack of a better term and the moral I still have mixed feelings on, and "Daring Done?" was great from a character standpoint but the story while great

After a couple of high-stakes world- and character-building episodes with big reveals, it's nice to go back to something reminiscent of season 1 for a change. :)
*Sigh*. Wow, just wow. I can't believe that the 150th episode of the show, turned out to be like this. And from a writer who all by accounts, should've been much better suited to the task. We've got our first Rainbow Dash episode of the season, which coincidentally is in the same slot as "Newbie Dash" last season, and features The Wonderbolts (as well as Scootaloo).
