I have an important announcement to make: after a long reflection over the course of my past and recent episode reviews, I’ve decided to no longer do those in general. The reason is that episode reviews are a lot less fun to make in contrast to making movie reviews and tv show reviews. Unlike those two categories, I feel like I’m doing a chore by doing an episode review of whatever show I’m analyzing for.
Well, we've got our first Spike episode of the season, and oh boy the stakes were high going into this one. After the utter trainwreck that was "Princess Spike" last season, Spike was in desperate need of a good spotlight episode. The premiere handled him well, so let's see if that carried over to his first time in the spotlight this season. So the lesson of On Your Marks is that ponies are dumb. Bulk Biceps is dumb (but funny), Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo are dumb, and Apple Bloom is about the dumbest pony ever. And while it's not as bad as The Gift of the Maud Pie, I found myself more bored by this on a second watching. It's another episode with a majorly nothing conflict, and while Polsky's sight gags were good, they aren't enough to carry a whole episode. Apple Bloom is just that dumb and boring. :| I might
These past two weeks were really worrying me when I learned about the snyposis for this episode, and when it was confirmed that Trixie was going to be the pony Twilight was weary of Starlight befriending, my fears only grew. I was seriously hoping that we wouldn't get a rehash of "What About Discord?", and thankfully that was not the case, for the most part. Well, this is an episode the fandom was undeniably both looking forward to and dreading ever since the tweet from the writers about Fluttershy having a little brother. Considering what happened the last time a character had a brother introduced (in the form of Shining Armor back at the very end of Season 2), this episode had to not only tell a good story, but also sell us on the fact that Fluttershy had a brother she never talked about or mentioned before. Man, I just adore the hell out of Canterlot Boutique's opening scene. Rarity and Pinkie never get quality time like that. Usually, it's more "Rarity, catch me!" or "YOU FORGOT TO FASTEN THE RAAAAOOOOPE!", i.e., Rarity getting caught up in Pinkie's shenanigans. And, well, I guess this qualifies as shenanigans, too, but at least she didn't have to eat one of the cupcakes. The Hooffields and McColts is best when it's focused on Fluttershy and Twilight. The rest? Just kinda eh. But one thing that really worked was the McColts not knowing about Twilight's ascension. Also the "it'll get old" joke and the doors against the cupcakes visual gag.
Well, "Friendship Games" has come and gone, but ponies are still hanging around for a couple of weeks. And at long last, we've got a Big Macinotsh/Apple Bloom episode, something that I'm sure a lot of people were eager to see.

The best part of The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows may just be Pumpkin Cake shushing Pinkie atop her mother's back in the opening scene. Well, we might as well enjoy this episode, because we've got a mid season hiatus that's likely to last until October. Yeah, Discovery Family's scheduling has been really weird.
Man, I love Dungeons & Discords. "Discord episode" has become as much an epithet as "Spike episode", but when the writers try and actually make sure he's doing interesting, funny things, Discord is great to have around. And somehow, they were able to make an episode that just brushes up against the cringe line without actually crossing it. Not ultimately substantial, but tons of fun, no real complaints. Also, dat Puerto Caballo.
This episode was going to air early in the U.K., like with the finale and "Top Bolt", but it got pulled due to cider references. And in the U.K. at least cider is predomintely alcoholic (in case you're wondering I'm told "The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000" has never aired on television there as a result). Well, it turns out I was premature about the hiatus, it won't be until after "Not Asking for Trouble", but this was an episode I wasn't going to wait for anyway. The synopsis made it sound like a bland RariJack filler episode that we really don't need (RariJack has been explored to death, there's nothing new you can do with it anymore).
