I’m no longer doing episode reviews · 4:11pm Jun 5th, 2022

Hey, everyone. Mr. J here.

I have an important announcement to make: after a long reflection over the course of my past and recent episode reviews, I’ve decided to no longer do those in general. The reason is that episode reviews are a lot less fun to make in contrast to making movie reviews and tv show reviews. Unlike those two categories, I feel like I’m doing a chore by doing an episode review of whatever show I’m analyzing for.

Well, that was an absurdly long mini hiatus, but the wait is over and the 100th episode has arrived!

This episode was penned by fan favorite writer M. A. Larson, and he promised us an episode that the fandom would love. Did he deliver, or did he somehow screw up? Well, it's time to find out.

Celestial Advice and All Bottled Up Review · 5:32pm Apr 15th, 2017

Time to kick off the seventh season for what is going to be a VERY big year for the franchise. In addition to a full 26 episode season, we've got the big movie due out this October, and over the Summer we've got three Equestria Girls 22 minute specials that will be released on Netflix (no word on whether or not this is a test for a possible spin-off series, or just a one-off experiment to keep the franchise going). And for the very first time in the show's history, we are

First and foremost, I know this is the first of pretty much every episode for the rest of the season that has aired early in Canada ("Forever Filly" airs in Canada today and tomorrow "Parental Glidance" will air in Canada), but my policy in regards to them, unless I say otherwise, is as follows:

Parental Glidance Review · 5:06pm May 20th, 2017

*Sigh*. Wow, just wow. I can't believe that the 150th episode of the show, turned out to be like this. And from a writer who all by accounts, should've been much better suited to the task. We've got our first Rainbow Dash episode of the season, which coincidentally is in the same slot as "Newbie Dash" last season, and features The Wonderbolts (as well as Scootaloo). The new writer is Josh Hamilton, who previously wrote for Avatar: The Last Airbender, Avatar: The Legend

Troublebutts [episode spoilers!] · 7:13pm Apr 9th, 2016

Dear god do I hate The Gift of Maud Pie, and I think I've figured out why. Yes, Maud is an inherently boring character and not worth building an episode around. Double yes, Rarity was acting like an idiot the entire time, and it was irritating more than amusing. But the umber one reason why I just do not like that episode is Pinkie. And it's not even the way she acts -- this is a far cry from the character destruction of season four, plus that line about riding actual swans, which I

A Rockhoof and a Hard Place Review · 4:42pm Sep 15th, 2018

Well, pony is back on Netflix, all seven seasons of it. And now it's just a matter of waiting for the U.S. to catch up on episodes now that Australia and Canada have aired the last episodes of Season 8 early. With Season 8 bobbing up and down in quality but finally seeming to be on a consistent track after the last two episodes, Kaita Mpambara who gave us "Horse Play" returned to write this episode. Since "Horse Play" remains the best episode of Season 8 so far, was Kaita able to follow up on

Sounds of Silence Review · 4:43pm Sep 29th, 2018

So we've got our third map mission of the season and it's the only one to use a mane six pairing. I'd be way more excited if not for "Surf and/or Turf" and "The Parent Map" making it clear that the map is now nothing more than a cheap plot device the writers can use to call whoever they want for no rhyme or reason. At least early on the rules of the map seemed clear, it could only call those tied directly to the Elements of Harmony, Spike actually made more sense than Starlight since he had his

I'm going to keep using the spoilers tag even if it's probably not needed, simply because I don't know how many people are waiting on U.S. airdates and how many have already seen the Australian airings. Anyway, after almost eight seasons in we finally get our first RariLight episode of the entire show (the closest we've ever come before was parts of "Sweet and Elite" and "Hearth's Warming Eve" though in the latter case it was impossible to determine whether that's how Twilight and Rarity

Triple Threat Review · 5:11pm Aug 19th, 2017

Well, apparently "Fame and Misfortune" was an unfinished Larson script that Larson himself wasn't thrilled with, which just further bumps the episode down in my opinion. I'm not sure if it's a form of plagerism to take someone else's unfinished work without permission and tweak it, even if you credit them. The show has had other writers rewrite episodes written by a different writer before, but they have always credited the author for the original story, meaning that someone wasn't brave enough

The Break Up Break Down Review · 4:42pm May 19th, 2018

Well, considering the number of times they've tossed a Hearth's Warming episode at us, and gave us a second Nightmare Night episode a few seasons back, it was inevitable they'd throw out a second Hearts and Hooves Day episode. Nick Confalone is in the writer's seat for this episode, and now we know that the season is gonna right through "Mean Six" before it hits the mid season hiatus we've been getting for the past several years. Nick Confalone's track record is mostly solid, but between "No

Secrets and Pies Review (Beware of Spoilers!) · 6:38pm Oct 8th, 2017

Well you should be aware of this by now, but the rest of Season 7 got leaked early because apparently someone at Hasbro got hacked (but considering Hasbro hasn't issued take downs on Daily Motion yet I suspect it's more them just being fed up with Discovery Family and looking for other ways to get the episodes out). With the synoposis for this episode and the episode ending itself being spoiled thanks to the IDW comics (apparently this episode was actually twenty first in production order so

Daring Done Review (Be Wary of Spoilers!) · 3:18am Sep 5th, 2017

Yes, you heard it right, folks! This episode got leaked early, but not from another country like Canada or Australia, the blame is solely on Hasbro. Apparently, someone wasn't aware that "Daring Done" and "To Change A Changeling" were airing out of production order ("Daring Done" was 17th in production order and "To Change A Changeling" 18th) and put "Daring Done" up early on YouTube, albeit requiring you to pay $3 if you wanted to see it in the U.S. But fans payed for the early episode and put
