at first the sheriff badge with a horseshoe inside might symbolize his being the sheriff of the earth pony tribe in Maretime Bay, as well as (using shining armor as an example) his duty to protect them, much like how shining protects the princesses.
then, you notice hearts around his shield/badge. What are those for? his love for his town? Or perhaps, his kindness.
since g5 canonically takes place in the same timeline as g4, It's safe to assume that our main cast at least know (which they do) about the great achievements of the mane 6,
but not just by books and legends,

maybe, they're descendants of them.
Hitch obviously being a descendant of Fluttershy.
