By loving God with all your heart, strength, soul, and mind, and loving your neighbor (all other people) as yourself, serving God with a joyful heart (doing things without thinking of reward, but about the good you can do and doing it out of concern, not out of self desire). Our works for ourselves -our jobs, our money, our rewards... all will come to nothing, and we ourselves, baring the Second Coming, will all physically die. Godly love, and works done with a righteous heart set toward God, are the only things that will survive, and build up a store for us.

That said, works are not salvation, but evidence of salvation. Which is to say that works cannot save, but a changed, believing person will do good works because they've changed.
