Text Separator is a free editing/proofreading program for Windows. It can also be used to break a story into chunks (This was its original purpose). When you open Text Seperator, it will look like this.

To use Text Separator:

  1. Copy your story into a *.txt file
  2. Write the path to the file in the first Text Box.
  3. Set the number of characters - that’s how many characters a split segment will contain (Between 20 and 40 is recommended).
  4. Copy the contents of your chosen list to a second .txt file.
  5. Write the path to the second file in the second Text Box.
  6. Press the button labeled "Grammar".

Text Separator should process your story instantly. Longer stories or longer lists may take a few seconds to work through. Once Text Separator has done its job the main window will display lines of text from your story. Once it has done this, you are ready to begin using Text Separator to edit your story.

You will know its ready to use when it looks like this:

Text Separator is not an automated program. You must make the changes it recommends yourself. This allows Text Separator to be used with any word processing program or website (such as Google Docs)., More importantly it ensures your story will not be ruined by a bot's automatic substitutions. After all, while it is unprofessional looking for your narration to say "it was very scary", it is perfectly fine for a character to say or think "it was very scary" and Text Separator (like all bots) has no way to tell the difference between narration and dialogue.

Here is how to make use of Text Separator's suggestions:

Each text field is labeled at the top of the main window. The "Text" field may be clicked to copy test. Use this and your word processor's find tool (usually accessed with ctrl+f) to locate a particular instance of a tagged word or phrase within your story. The "Number" field tells you what tag that section of text contains. The check boxes will become ticked as you click on a line within the Text field to let you know that you have already changed (or decided not to change) that instance.

Instances of a particular tag are grouped together for editing convenience. Scroll to the bottom of a grouping to find Text Separator's recommendation for what to do about that particular tag. If any text is cut off by the size of it's text box hovering your mouse over the text will create a pop up displaying the full text.

Simply work your way down the list, changing any instances of tagged words you see fit to.

Happy Editing!
