I've discovered that our brand new shiny router/firewall has a default setting of dropping idle connections after 5 minutes. But not in a friendly "Oh hey, time's up - you'll need to reconnect your session" sort of way, but more like "all traffic now routed to /dev/null" sort of way.

This kills the ssh session

(not to mention the backend authentication connections, tomcat <-> httpd connections, and others that we're discovering as we speak.)
