That ability was not granted to authors, because when stories do belong in a group and that author want's to be a whiny shit, the author can't remove it. Only the group's admins can in cases like this one where it doesn't belong.

If the group admins are inactive, you'll have to talk to the site admins. I'd suggest going to the front page of the group, finding out who the admins to the group are, and politely messaging them.

You can also just not display this group on your story's card.
