A headset has been suggested to me, but given that I already have fine headphones, I'd also be okay with a free-standing microphone.

I wish I could give a suggestion, but I could hardly ever found something cheap and good, but I could never find anything decent in one single piece. So I opted for this (High quality headphones), but as far ad the mic is concerned, many podcast mics are quite good, such as this.
