ELAPIDS
The family of snakes that includes cobras, mambas, coral snakes, taipans, and kraits among its members.

Butterfly Cobra

Considered to be the most beautiful of snakes, the Butterfly Cobra of the Crystalline Raj is also one of the most venomous.

Fire Cobra

a snake with unusual magical venom. Different venom mixed in each fang are sprayed and react, creating a stream of napalm like flaming liquid.

Inkhomi

Also called the "Crowing Cobra", this mamba relative is well known throughout Zebrica for its potent venom and cockerel-like crowing.

Sailsnake

a flying snake. that's it.

Runespoor

a three headed snake native to the Zebrican rainforests, the 3-foot long runespoor is frightening not only for its venom, but also for its primate-level intelligence

Crystal Snake

Native to the Crystalline Raj, these snakes have odd sexual dimorphism. Males, like the one shown above, average at 3 feet long, have frills, and are venomous.

the females can grow as long as 15 feet and resemble pythons. Though primarily constrictors, they are capable of delivering a powerful electric shock. Both genders are able to "swim" through the ground.

False Hydra

Native to various islands in Southeast Khaan, as well as the Crystalline Raj, these giant snakes have evolved to fill the niche of the hydra in their habitat. Each head has a separate mind, but the central ("Cobra") head controls the body and settles disputes between the heads. Only the central three heads have venom, a neurotoxin in the central head, and a hemotoxin in the two "rattlesnake" heads. Like true hydras, two heads will grow back for one cut off, and any excess heads will fall off after a few hours.

Despite being predators, there has NEVER been any record of a false hydra attacking a sapient being, and in fact, these snakes are often domesticated.

VIPERS
A very widespread group of animals, this group includes rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, and many other infamous venomous snakes.

Monai

primarily eating birds, this stalker of the Tapiri rainforests can magically hypnotize prey.

Hoop Snake

the Equestrian and Hosstralian relative of the tsuchinokos, the hoop snake has a poisonous sting.

by putting its tail in its mouth, it can roll at incredible speeds.

Sea Reek

A species actually closer related to the Asp than any true sea snake, the sea reek is capable of attaining a length of 5 feet, and is venomous

Dipsas

a venomous snake, this adder's bite, while not fatal, does cause extreme thirst

AZTECOPHIDS and the Nozuchi
A very unusual family of venomous snakes related to elapids native exclusively to the thickest jungles of Tapiri that have developed strange feather-like scales.

Quetzalcoatl

Native to Tapiri, these large constrictors are over 30 feet long and about 750 pounds. the "feathers" that made it famous are really large, flattened scales that can be extended to frighten prey or even other predators.

TITANOPHIDS
Massive snakes, indeed among the largest vertebrates in existence.

World Snake

A long, low hiss pervaded the whole of the air. Fear raced up each pony's spine. They turned slowly around.

It had stopped rising, two miles, four miles, five miles, ten miles or more into the sky. Some of its body- perhaps most of its body- still seemed to be submerged in the earth, but what protruded out and up was as broad as the whole of the whitetail woods. It was jet black all over, even on its vast belly, up and up, craning back their necks to see, until their wandering eyes stopped at its huge head, bigger than Canterlot, shaped like a giant spade. Four blazing green eyes, each one bigger than an Ursa Major, flitted with unholy speed across the world, thick black lines for pupils. It opened its mouth. Fangs the size of Ponyville were a dull bone-white. A long, dull blue tongue, wider than a dragon's wingspan, longer than the road between Ponyville and the Everfree Forest, lolled out, flicked. Another hiss rose on the wind.

No creature on land matches these serpents in size. they thankfully spend most of their time sleeping, absorbing nutrients through their skin, and few reach their full adult size, described above.

Experienced scholars have come to the conclusion a full-grown adult is the size of the island of Gaur

Typhon

Oceanic cousins of the World Snake, Typhons are nowhere near as massive as their land-dwelling cousins, as shown by this image of a wounded and crazed adult Megalodon attacking an adult.

Like many dragon species, they are capable of swimming in molten lava, and this often adheres to their scales to form a near-impenetrable covering.

Apep

Native to the Zebrican Riverlands, the average Apep can grow roughly 30 feet long. Primarily nocturnal, these massive snakes are also mostly aquatic, feeding on fish, crocodiles, and spinosaurs

Imugi

Found mainly in Carrea and Ib'xian, the Imugi can reach lengths of 40 feet, and are often very aggressive.

Stone Snake

These large snakes are found throughout Khaan, and are known for their burrowing ability.

Unlike the sub-adults, full-grown stone snakes posess a lustrous metallic sheen throughout their scales. In a process that takes many years in the wild, the pebble-like scales and massive osteoderms are polished by the rough subterranean environment.

Aside from the dull grey scales of the sub-adult, there are several other key traits separating it from the more mature adult. Most noticeable is the up to five foot tall osteoderm on the dorsal surface of the head. This "horn" does not grow back once broken and becomes more fragile as it ages, making it exceedingly rare to ever see an adult displaying the iconic feature.

CONSTRICTORS
Snakes in this family, which includes pythons, anacondas, and boas, primarily kill prey by strangulation-none of them have venom.

Frost Python

Frost Pythons, are the only variety of constrictor Snake (measuring 11 feet long) adapted to cold weather. They hibernate in underground burrows when the snowy winters come.

Unlike other Snakes, which are solitary carnivores, Frost Pythons are social carnivores, always sticking together in packs and hunting things like Hares and Grouse for food. They sometimes cause mayhem and mischief towards local sapients just for fun. The packs that live in the high mountains are unusually aggressive, even by Frost Python standards (probably because up in that high-elevated terrain, food can be very scarce).

Bashe

Native to Manechuria, the Bashe is a great and greatly feared species of large snake. Although its preferred prey is deer, it will happily devour anything and anyone that can not escape its jaws or its coils.

Venti

Found across the world, when using their magic to gather clouds around them, Venti (aka: Tornado Serpents, Anemoi, Storm Vipers) look like tornadoes come to life, with long, dark, serpentine bodies made of swirling winds. When not surrounded by clouds and wind, they have glowing dark-violet eyes, and look like pythons, though with a mist blue coloring.

Venti are aggressive creatures that travel in packs of three to five. They create violent, localized storms in order to weaken their prey.

Ashwinder

Fire-proof snakes, non-venomous, found throughout Stirrope

Talwurm

One of Snake Island's most unique creatures, the Talwurm is just about 10 centimeters in length, has a long but robust body with a head of a centimeter long. This species is unique because for some features: its only diet based on devour the small arthropods. Unlike of many of its serpentine ancestors, they not only swallow their prey, it also chews, well, not in the way any animal would normally.

To understand how works its way of chewing, we must look at the structure of the mouth. The lower jaw is split, the fangs are at the front of the jaw, and a number of lateral teeth, more larger the rest of the upper jaw are able to move independently like mouthparts, so these are closed in the middle of the mouth.

At the moment of hunting, the Talwurm, first nails his front teeth with a quick movement into its prey, and at the time that gets through their exoskeleton, quickly used their lower jaw to move and "inspect" the arthropod to find the head and thus crush it, in order to immobilize and prevent to escape. Then, when have total control of their prey, it decides to start crushing its prey with modified teeth. This is quite useful because with crushing the arthropod, avoid spending energy to digest and the lethargy periods, which it would take a while to get rid of the exoskeleton.

CRAWLERS
Descendants of basal snakes that have not only kept their limbs, but have evolved to make use of them once more. A few, more derived, species are actually legless, but they're still more closely related to other crawlers than any other group of snakes.

Common Peluda

A large species of Crawler, the Common Peluda is found in swamps across the northern hemisphere.

The Peluda is in the same family of Crawlers as the Forest Crawler, Spark Snake, Wadjet, and Coatl, meaning it has managed to evolve feathers convergently with those of archosaurs. In the Peluda's case, these have become venomous quills capable of being launched in self defense.

The Peluda is also capable of spitting poison and breathing fire, leading to earlier misclassifications labeling it as a type of dragon.

Crested Peluda

Native to Stirrope, the Crested Peluda lacks the venomous quills (it has quills, but they're not venomous) and fire-breathing abilities of the Common Peluda. This species hunts in the reed beds, allowing itself to blend with the tall grass, before striking out at any creature that passes by. The peluda feeds on many small creatures of the swamp, from frogs and rats to the young of some dragon species.

The Crested Peluda is the size of a small crocodile, but it's quills and nasty temper make it a creature to avoid. Luckily, it is a shy animal and flees from confrontation, which considering it's venom, is a good thing.

Pygmy Peluda

Native to Equus, this Peluda species is foal-sized. Lacking the ability to throw its spines or breathe fire, this forest dweller relies on camouflage and its venomous quills for defense

Forest Crawler

A relative of the Peluda, the Forest Crawler is another feathered snake relative.

Found in the forests of Mustikk, Stirrope, and the northern part of the Everfree, the Forest Crawler is non-venomous, but can grow up to 20 feet long, allowing it to tackle most prey with brute force.

During the colder months, they become less active, though their feathers and primitive endothermy allows them to avoid hibernation altogether.

Certain individuals appear to have an ice-based breath weapon, and most herpetologists agree that this may be related to the age of the individuals, believing it may be something which manifests after a certain number of years (40 or 50)

Giant Crawler

at 1445 feet long, this is the largest of the Crawlers. Native to northern Khaan, these massive beasts thankfully act more like their distant World Snake and Typhon cousins, and spend most of their time sleeping.

3207837 That's a full grown one. most are smaller:twilightsheepish:

3207407 Dude these are incredible snakes. Did you come up with their origins because DAMN it's impressive.

3524404 Some yes, some no.

The pics (Except the Hoop Snake and Tsuchinoko) are not mine, and and the actual creatures can often be found in other sources.

the DETAILS are where my creative juices get flowing. I build on source material most of the time.

The World Snake from "It's a Dangerous Business, Going out your door" (AWESOME fic) for example. The italicized text is from the fic, but the none-italicized text is my own take on it

3207407 The world serpents, otherwise known as the Jörmungandr, you sir, have earned a mustache :moustache:

3207407 How big do Butterfly Cobra's get, and how tameable are they.

Would you, for instance, be able to have one laid lazily beside you without fear of it lashing out unless on command.

I ask this because I'm already planning the first chapter of the next book, and in said book, Vuur Koning (or rather Nova) holds a court of foreign affairs with a Butterfly Cobra as his pet. in the same manner Celestia would hold the day court with her pet Pheonix

you call it insane? I call it an insurance policy against assassins :pinkiecrazy:

EDIT: also, would you say this would was a Butterfly Cobra?

the back of the hood looks like such
