Sonic 31st Anniversary Stream - Sonic Origins · 10:23pm Jun 23rd, 2022

Figured I'd take a bit of a break from writing tonight and stream some Sonic Origins. Is this a good collection, or a $40 bet banking on the modding community eventually doing what Sega doesn't?

Had work yesterday. Shame I missed this. I might watch it over the weekend though.

I might do another one of Sonic Delta once I get a story update or two out.

I don't know what's up with my Twitch channel. The front page is still showing clips and streams from 12 years ago.

Yeah, it'll do that. Clips are forever, apparently.

Been watching the VOD though. Up to Metropolis, and there are parts where I could swear you're going backwards, until I realize that when you can fly like Tails in a level that wraps vertically like Metropolis, backwards is relative. The Special Stages in this version of Sonic 1 seem off though. I mean, I never once cared about how quickly the level rotated (and there was a long time when I didn't even know that the Up/Down blocks did anything. But in Origins they rotated too fast, and I could swear either the jumping speed or the falling speed was dialed up, because you seemed to be flying all over the place.

I'm fairly certain that the "Up" and "Down" blocks increase and decrease the rate of rotation.

And yeah, it was certainly easier when the stage rotated at like 15 fps.

And the springs seemed a lot more powerful this time around.

Still haven't gone back to it since last stream, maybe I'll do more tomorrow, who knows?

I've also been wanting to see how fast I can do Sonic Delta (ROM hack that puts 1, 2, 3, and Knuckles together into one game, one control scheme, one score).

Yeah, I know. But I could swear that Origins took it from "no amount of Up blocks will make me notice it enough to care" to "no amount of Down blocks will lower it enough to help."

Sonic Delta, you say? That must be what you were talking about with romhackers making a better Sonic game than Sonic Team, but I could swear that Christian Whitehead and Sonic Mania already established that. Though you running through the Genesis trilogy rolled up into one game strangely reminds me of that time you did a high score run of S3&K years back. I know you did it in anticipation of something, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it was.

And not to backseat game on someone who's been playing these games as long as I have and probably knows stuff I don't about them, but I always like to spindash where Silver Sonic descends before that boss fight begins in Sonic 2's Death Egg. I think you can score two free hits doing it, but the last version I played of Sonic 2 was for the Mega Collection, so I wouldn't know if that trick had somehow been coded out in the last 20 years.

I believe I did my first tool-assisted score run of S3&K in anticipation of Sonic Mania. Got like 1.3 million I thought.

I came back to do it again for the 29th and 30th anniversary, and got 2.1 million and 4.1 million, respectively.

The world record is 5.8 million, set back in 2018.
