Questions about Equestrian Timeline · 12:38am May 19th, 2022
Hey everyone,
Real fast, since am actively writing and am trying to plan stuff better. I have a couple questions;
1) What were the months called? I tried looking it up and can't find anything. I know they have like Nightmare Night (Halloween), Hearts and Hooves Day (Valentine's Day), etc, but I don't see actual month names on a calendar. Granted, never saw a calendar either.
2) Would you say that every "season" would constitute a year passing? Is how I see it.
Once I figure these out, it'll be easier for me to fix everything and move forward with finishing some of these stories up and get to Icy haha.
Signing off,

1. There's never been any indication of what the months are called, as far as I recall.
2. I've always seen it as one season = one year, especially since almost all of the seasons have at least one winter episode.

1. Am flipflopping on what to call it. I know we mostly named the months after gods/goddesses (I believe) in the Georgian Calendar.
2. Thank goodness, so that'll be easy haha. I just gotta look for the winter eps and consider those year end.

Actually, no. The days of the week are named after gods.
Not sure what some of the months are named after, but I do know that September-December were originally the seventh-tenth months (sept- means seven, oct- means eight, etc). Of course that was before July and August were added to the calendar in honor of Julius and Augustus Caesar
I don’t think there’s been any indication of month names. Although, I believe there is some precedent for using moons instead of months.
I don’t necessarily see each season as a year. There’s some sense of time passing, but like most cartoons, there isn’t a really fixed timeline. If each season was a year, I’d expect to see a lot more growth out of characters like spike, the crusaders, and the cake twins. But I’m not necessarily picky about it.

Huh, I guess I got my memory all jumbled. And I saw some people point out that the days are the same, but there's no mention of months. So is either pony puns or some form of astrological takes.

I see what you mean about the seasons, I think is mostly just for my own 'clock' so to speak, as time in most cartoons (save a few), are all over the place. Writing stuff like that is hard, at least for me. And I'd be interested in seeing your moon-calendar.

Yeah, figuring out seasons is hard, like I said, I’m not picky about people saying 1 season is a year.
I didn’t name a moon calendar, but I think there’s a few scenes where stuff happening in the past is referred to as “many moons ago” (I believe the zap apple episode does this). So that implies using a moon as a unit of time and lunar cycles roughly line up to its months. I’ve also feel like I’ve seen some fantasy books refer to months as moons.

I do remember what you're talking about, but I always figured 'many moons ago' as a metaphor for time passing. Although am looking into what would a good way to name lunar months, with heavy focus on ancient Greek, since they borrow a lot of myths from them.

It’s possible that it’s that as well, but I have heard moons used for months before. Greek would be a good influence. Don’t be afraid to have them be a little boring, we have months that are basically just 7th month. Keep in mind that pure lunar calandets drift as well. So I’d avoid giving anything seasonal a fixed date.

For a bit, I thought about using Greek influence and name it based off that, but my brain refused to give me good names. So currently am just gonna use our system, until I can come up with something better. I'll probably even use this in the story haha
