My reaction to the Make Your Mark trailer · 9:09pm May 12th, 2022
The trailer for "Make Your Mark" landed and like every pony, I too have my opinions, so let's go through them real quick.
Positives: I honestly thought the animation looks pretty good for TV. As far as a I can tell, the animation is not quite as detailed or as colorful as the movie, but I think it works for what it is. I also have to admit, I'm getting used to the new voice actors. It was a bit odd hearing the new voice actors in Tell Your Tale, but I think they are growing on me, and in the trailer, they almost sound like the original actors. I also like how they expand upon the conflicts between the pony races and their connection to magic. It's so easy to just have the characters be instant friends with no conflicts, but it makes sense that there would be still plenty of issues to work through, especially if the magic is still not quite at its full potential.
Negatives: The trailer does reveal a little too much about the movie, to the point that it seems like it's giving a beat by beat summery of the movie rather than showing just enough to pique our curiosity. The movie's plot summery doesn't help matters as it says "the Earth Ponies discover they now too have powers" and if you've seen the trailer, you would know that the ponies will gain the power to talk to animals and presumably other powers we've seen from earth ponies from MLP:FiM. Yeah, I doubt there are any surprises left. Also, I'm a bit iffy about the baby dragon at the end of the trailer. First of all, adding a baby to a show rarely works out. Dil from Rugrats and Poof from The Fairly Odd Parents springs to mind. Not to mention, they made the mistake of giving the baby wings. As we all know from the episode "Molt Down", dragons aren't born with wings. It's something that develops after achieving the Molt. Just to be clear, I am not expecting perfection from the writers of Make Your Mark. I can accept the creators making some continuity errors. However, I expected them to at least remember that Spike had no wings at first, implying that dragons don't have wings at a young age. It just seems like a fairly big detail they should have known about.
Conclusions: I'm cautiously optimistic. I'll admit, A New Generation raised a high bar for me, and after seeing the trailer, I'm not quite as excited, but I am certainly curious. I am interested in seeing what directions the writers will take this show and whether or not they will successfully connect this show to MLP:FiM. Well, regardless of where this show is going, I do plan on checking it out.
As a Spike fan, I'm in the process of accepting that G5 will most likely ignore his existence lol.
That's life.
Anyway, there better be a reason about why this dragon kid has wings already.
