My TV Show Rating Score:

5/5: It is an awesome show!
4/5: It’s a good show with minor flaws
3/5: It’s overall okay/guilty pleasure
2/5: It’s bad but not awful
1/5: Look, up in the sky! It’s super bad!
0/5: MY EYEEEESSS!!!

Greetings, everyone! This is Mr. J back with a very special TV cartoon series review for this afternoon! I am now reviewing this Disney animated series entitled: “Star vs The Forces of Evil”. Now this series looked very appealing to me in terms of visuals and its animation style which gave me Fairly OddParents vibes. The first time I was exposed to this show was watching clips of Toffee, one of the major antagonists within the series. After seeing those clips, I was instantly interested in checking out the rest of the show because he looked like a complete badass. Thus, a couple months ago, I was able to binge-watch the whole series and see for myself if it’s as great as most fans claim it to be. To be honest with y’all......it’s an underwhelming disappointment.

This series is about a young princess (queen-in-training) named Star who is a reckless, destructive, and careless little girl under the care and authority of the rulers of Mewni—Queen Moon Butterfly and King River Butterfly. Seeing her recklessly handle the magical wand of immense power, Moon sends her to Earth where she will be guided by a teenage boy in high school and learn how to be a proper princess.

First off, I just want to say that I actually hate Star as a character. There are some things I like about her, but the negatives outweigh the positives when you consider her overall character arch throughout the whole series. I just hate how utterly annoying she is, how rude she is, how destructive she is, and how completely obnoxious her personality, tone, and voice really are. If the main character of a cartoon show is hated for a lot of reasons, then you know the series is going to shit unless they undergo some serious character development.

There are many other characters I genuinely dislike as well such as River, Ponyhead, Marco’s parents, Jackie, Ludo’s monsters, and some of Marco’s friends to name a few. Tom Lucitor, Kelly, Glossaryck, and Moon are pretty much decent characters. Janna however was a very entertaining supporting character in this series, so I’ll give the writers that.

As far as the story is concerned, it’s somewhat grounded but it is filled with unnecessary filler episodes. Seriously, the number of pointless filler just almost made me what to stop watching this show; luckily, I’m very good with long-suffering and patience (well, most of the time anyway) which is why I watched the series until the end. In my personal opinion, the show went downhill right after episode 14 of season 2 when Marco and Jackie became a couple. As much as I found Jackie to be a bland stereotypical love interest character, at least her being with Marco was something I found to be adorable and worthy since Marco always had a crush on her since the beginning. However, once it was abundantly clear that Star had a crush on Marco, that’s when I started to dislike the series a lot more.

Because in my opinion, the Starco ship is detestable. I hate that ship with a passion because I didn’t like how they kept foreshadowing and teasing the relationship since the first season without any actual build-up. To me, it feels forced, contrived, and unearned. Not to mention that Marco doesn’t seem like the right kind of guy to date Star. He is too normal and well-mannered for the likes of Star Butterfly. The only thing Star should date is a massive fly swatter to squish butterflies like her. Again, this is my opinion and how I feel towards the Starco ship.

Lastly, the morals in these episodes range from toxic to non-existent. One example would be how princesses dread going to the princess-training center where they are stripped of their personalities and are given generic princess-etiquette personalities instead. Well, once after Marco and Star save them with Ponyhead’s help, the princesses still haven’t learned a thing and return to being rebellious little brats. What does that teach children? That they are to be themselves by causing property damage and disregarding parental authority? This is what I’m talking about—toxic morals that children should stay away from.

Lastly, the ending of the series was the final nail in the coffin for me. How can people still like this Star character after she committed genocide of magical creatures that rely on magic to live? Destroying all the magic that allowed Mewni to thrive for countless generations? Just....just absolutely atrocious writing. Was there no other way for Star to defeat the final villains of the series that didn’t require genocide or extinction of magic? That’s the writers running out of ideas when it comes to properly concluding the show. Star couldn’t bear the thought of losing her boyfriend (UGH!) which was one of the motives that drove her to do that. I don’t care that she was trying to “save her friends” or “trying to stop Mini Loveberry”. SHE COMMITTED MAGICAL GENOCIDE!! She is a horrible character! End. Of. Discussion.

Despite my hatred for this series, Toffee and Ludo were the two primary characters I enjoyed the most.

This guy was an amazing villain and it is a crime he had limited screen-time and was killed off easily in the premiere of season 3. He was manipulative, calm, collected, he knew how to raise the stakes, he was unlike any villain I’ve seen in this show, and had a pretty simplistic goal that didn’t involve wealth, fame, or power unlike Ludo. Michael C. Hall did a fantastic job in voicing him in this show. Plus, he has an attractive design if I say so myself. Oh, great, Joker is attracted to lizards now...

Ludo was only interesting after season one. He had the most profound character development than anyone else, and that’s saying something. In the first season, he was laughably generic, goofy, and incompetent—someone I couldn’t take seriously. But from seasons 2-4, he went through surprising character development and had a deep bond with the spider and the eagle. I actually felt sorry for him and everything that happened to him; we saw his family, his shitty excuse of a father, and his poor brother who longed to see him again. Why couldn’t he be the main character of this series? They could’ve shortened this series by making it two seasons long that focuses on Ludo, his family, and have him fight against Toffee and learn what it means to be a friend, a family man, a hero. I want to watch that show!

So yeah, “Star vs the Forces of Evil” had so much potential, but it was wasted so badly with butchered morals, half-baked character growth, unfunny humor, needless filler, unlikable characters, and a disastrous ending. This gets a 2/5: Brain cells vs the Forces of Stupidity. If you enjoyed the show, good for you. I just wished it could’ve been a lot better.

Peace.

Yeah, I'm not into that f***** up magical genocide either. I like Hekapoo. :pinkiesad2: :flutterrage:

Honestly, someone in the writing department had to be that dumb of having Star do that thing she did in the series finale.

I mean..... do they have no idea what the results would be in the fanbase be because of that?!!! >:/

No offense for what I said in the first part btw when using the D word. :twilightsheepish:

Though I do keep thinking.... what if Hekapoo ended up surviving and is still alive?

I mean.... I really don't buy her being so chill of wanting to die though. That just ain't right for her.

I definitely like Steven Universe way more than Star as a character.

What about Eclipsa?

Btw, what are your thoughts on this show and this review?

I think both were pretty good, but my two favorite characters in the show were Eclipsa and Toffee.

Nice. We both can agree that Toffee was an absolute badass. Love that guy!

Thanks. I love Eclipsa because of how well-written she is like Toffee, but is much nicer and more forgiving.

I still haven't seen this show, although I will admit that I've been watching some clips with Toffee recently. I can see why you consider him a highlight, that's for sure.
