Hello and welcome to another weekly update! I just wanted to share some of my thought process this week, as me and my editor work through the chapters to go from rough to final draft edits/revisions.
- Took the week to relax more
- PWC2 in progress
- DoH 3, chapters 1-3 now published!
Dash of Humanity 3 Musings
No spoilers, just the stuff you'd get from the short/long description.
So Chapter 3 and 4 are a bit shorter than others, I think most average 4k words, but these are 2k. And then I obsessed about it for a bit. It's not bad they're short, and I think it's necessary world building for a time loop. Chapters 2-4 set up what a normal day looks like, the realization of the loop, and so forth... so I felt a little bad that there's no explosions and super cool stuff I guess.
Chapter 5 has a really fun scene, and wraps up Act 1 so we can move onto some cooler stuff. It was hard not to rush past the Prelude/Act 1 to get to the cool stuff. Hopefully I made the world building interesting, and I'm just over-analyzing Chapter 3 and 4. In order to have Groundhog's Day, you've got to have Bill Murray live out the first couple loops figuring out he's in a loop. So hopefully it's all in my head and you're not all gonna abandon the story because Dawn needs to come to the realization naturally.
Oh, and regarding Interludes... I have Interludes between acts and a couple of them are only about 1k words. So I'm still debating if the Interludes should release as a bonus, or on Wed/Sat. I'm as excited as anyone to fully publish the story, so I'd hate to have a week where you felt like there just wasn't enough... On the other hand, this is the first week in over a month I've had free time from writing, so if I rush right back into pushing chapters out I may burn out.
Chapter 6 is an interlude, and has a very important reveal. So on one hand, being 1k words may be offset by a very juicy bit of info. Anyway, I'm open to thoughts on release schedules or anything on your mind about the story. Since this is the first time I've had a "release schedule" it's all pretty new to me. It's also only the second time I wrote the full story before releasing it (first was Puppet to her Fame). Quality wise I think write first, edit, release is a very strong decision. However, I've always been the sort of author who flies by the seat of their pants and just writes and releases things as soon as they can... and I guess I'm still getting past the dissonance between the old way and the new way of writing.
Thanks for reading. I've got some very fun revisions to make to an upcoming chapter this weekend, and a backlog of fun looking games to play. If I can get past my boredom / lack of focus / analysis paralysis.
I don't really have any updates to tease for other stories, but it has been very nice to take a breather this last week. I'll resume a more regular writing schedule next week. I was thinking something like "PWC2/TD2 - alternating Mondays, One-Shots (if any) Fridays, DoH3 Wed/Sat."
