*Sighs in extreme annoyance and depression*

Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Mr. J here with another show review for tonight. This evening, I will be talking about how I feel towards the most popular Nickelodeon show and one of the surviving mainstream cartoons that exist in the history of cartoons; the mascot of the channel; the King of Cartoons himself: SpongeBob Squarepants. Oh, the insurmountable pain that arises every time I look upon this show! Before I discuss in depth why I despise this show, I want to first state my history with this once-legendary cartoon program.

Growing up, this was most likely the very first Nicktoon show that I grew up with. This was one of the primary shows I resorted to so I could escape reality and enjoy the hilarious, dumb, yet inspirational show that used to teach actual morals to children back in its golden age. This was among my favorites of all time next to The Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, T.U.F.F Puppy, Jimmy Neutron, Catscratch, My Life as a Teenage Robot, and a few others. I loved it to death from seasons 1-3 because the characters there actually meant something to me; plus, they all had more than one dimension, experienced character growth, and were actually funny with well-made jokes. Then there was the first film which I likewsie enjoyed watching and served as a great conclusion to the series with the talented creator Stephen Hillenburg on board.

As the years went by and as I got older, I had fond memories ever since then. When I heard the news that Hillenburg died on November 26th, 2018, I was heartbroken and completely shocked. I will never forget his amazing vision he made and followed by making this show and how he created one of my most favorite programs ever. May he rest in peace. And... what the fuck did the cunts at Nickelodeon do in respect to his legacy?

They created more seasons and spinoffs for the show despite how much Stephen was against such ideas as he didn't want to jump the shark after having made three seasons and one movie. It's no wonder he left the show prior to his death. What an absolute scummy way to disrespect his wishes.

Because SpongeBob has been going on for almost forever and having now a thirteenth season?! Seriously?! It's just...unbelievable. Everything that made SpongeBob so funny and entertaining has been long gone. He is now nothing more than a complete annoyance to no end with no intriguing personality other than being a perpetual pain in the ass. Patrick Star, who was once a dumb funny character who would occasionally say something wise and intelligent, is now just dumb....that's it. Squidward Tentacles, who always hated the yellow turd but still cared about him deep down, now just hates Spongebob and is an overall unlikable character. Eugene Krabs, who always loved money to an extreme but still had a heart of gold, is now a one-dimensional covetous thief. As for Plankton....well he's still Plankton. He is probably one of the very few characters who weren't character-assassinated.

Honestly, I do have soft spots for some episodes in season 4, but season 5 was where it all went downhill in my opinion. This is why I really hate modern SpongeBob; however, the first three seasons and the first film still have a special place in my heart. That was when the real SpongeBob was still alive.

This show also introduced me to Tom Kenny, the man behind the voice (who is also Gary, Patchy the Pirate, and more). Ever since I watched the very pilot of the series, I loved his voice, his style, and his most iconic animated voice performance. The same can be said for Bill Fagerbakke, Roger Bumpass, Clancy Brown, Mr. Lawrence, and the others. I understand how much Tom Kenny and his friends love this show and love the characters they've been voicing for so long, but Nickelodeon made me lose all respect I had for this series. The voice actors are great though...just not for this shit-fest of a program that went to rot.

I mean, the animation is glorious, the voice acting is top-notch, the music is wonderful, the themes are nostalgic and iconic, but the episodes themselves that comprise of modern SpongeBob are just unfunny, cringe-worthy, atrocious, disrespectful, and stupid. *Sighs* Look how they massacred my boy.....

Therefore, this show gets a 2/5: betrayed. But hey, at least the memes are funny to look at. See the final rating of the show score scale as an example.

Now, would anyone like some chocolate?

I feel betrayed, too.

I never thought of it that way, but you're right, seasons 1 through 3 were the golden age of the show, and at this point it's mostly random stupidity. I still enjoy it, but only as a distraction, I more or less use it as white noise, but I'm not really a big fan of The Loud House or The Casagrandes, so SpongeBob is what works for me, even when I'm barely paying any attention. Like you said, there are some memes that keep the show going. But still, I agree, Stephen had a good idea and didn't want the show to jump the shark, and yet Nick basically told him to either continue helping with the show or leave, and I don't blame him for leaving either. While I enjoy the Patrick Star Show, I really hate Kamp Koral, mainly because of the art style, at least the Patrick Star Show still has the same form of animation as SpongeBob for the most part, not including the Frankenstein parody characters in some of the episodes. I wasn't super happy with some of the character design changes, namely Patrick and SpongeBob's new designs. Growing up, I never saw Patrick wearing a shirt, just his pants, and SpongeBob just looks weird with that curl and the fact that he's wearing a bowtie instead of his normal necktie. In short, Nick ruined Stephan's masterpiece with corrupt commercialism, they didn't care about Stephen, they cared about money

Well, I do love the first few seasons of this show but later seasons. Yes, I agree with you. But there are funny moment and meme that I like from this show that made me laugh. There was that one moment from a SpongeBob movie that made me laugh hard

Dang thing to me is...the Spongbob Musical has kind of made me look back on the show a little more fondly...certainly its beginnings. But yeah, modern Spongebob and particularly Nick using it as a crutch has unfortunately caused the network to kill other shows due to not getting the sponge's ratings.

My favorite scenes from the movie

Agree! Those were some of my favorite moments in the movie

And another problem I have with the show after season 3, they make more and more adult jokes. When I was younger, my parents would only watch SpongeBob because back then, it was normal for parents to watch their child's show with them. IDK if people do that anymore, but if they do, how are they going to explain why they're laughing when an adult joke comes up that their kid doesn't understand. Like in the episode where Krabs and Plankton had a bet to see if they could do each other's role, and one of the scenes has this dialogue

Krabs: Did it just get dark, or have I put off my cataract surgery too long?
Squidward: No Mr. Krabs, it's that time of the month

Jokes like that are something you probably wouldn't have gotten as a little kid, but as you grow up, you understand the joke more. It's just like that children's book "Would You Like to Play with My Balls." And yes, that's a real thing, would you be able to read that to kids without bursting into laughter? That's my point, if an adult is watching the show with their child(ren) and laughs at an adult joke, it's not going to be easy explaining why they're laughing

I’ve actually frequently considered making Spongebob one of the few TV shows to make individual episode reviews of. Mainly because, like you said, the show has been going on for so long that it feels like it’s never going to end. That, and I’m also aware of the varying quality of it.

On second thought, I’ll be reviewing the series by season.

What do you like about Spongebob?

5612731
Just about everything. The characters, the voice acting, the animation, etc.

As a matter of fact, it was pretty much one of the only shows on Nickelodeon that stuck with me through the years. Most other programs on the channel weren’t too appealing for me.

5612732
Don't you feel as if it has rotten away in terms of quality?

5612733
That’s why I’m reviewing the series by season, actually. Even if I have enjoyed the show at the most, it’s hard to deny that there were times where it wasn’t at its peak. Heck, there are some episodes that were my least favorites in the series.

That's cool.

I wanted to review this for a while now, and I figured that I would save this for last at the end of this month.

I started watching Spongebob at 9 or 8 years old and I watched the various chapters they broadcasted, so I have no control which episodes are from each season.

That being said, I did briefly watch some new episodes and oof. My sister and I have noticed that some cartoons nowadays (there are exceptions such as Gravity Falls, The Owl House and many more) the characters act like they are high on sugar. And new SpongeBob is pretty much like that. But I still like SpongeBob nonetheless.
