Opening Up A Tip Jar! · 6:23am Oct 31st, 2021
So, I've been debating this back and forth for a long while, since I know a lot of creative sorts do things like patreon or ko-fi or other donation things to let people toss them money here and there.
Truth is, I don't really like feeling like someone who sticks their hand out and expects money. I'm writing Rubicon and its side stories because I love stories, writing, and everything related to them, and because I wanted to share something I'm passionate about with other people who might find some enjoyment from it...so that's why I've waffled so long on the idea. Its the same weird internal sense that prevents me from hitting relatives up for money, or expecting others to treat me when they invite me places.
At the same time, I've realized that the state of my physical health does not allow me to be capable of traditional employment. Chronic pain in my joints that sometimes leave me barely able to move is not conducive to the very physically demanding wage-slave jobs that I qualify for. And that, even if putting out a tip jar only nets me ten or fifteen dollars in a month, that's fifteen bucks I can put towards things I need, like saving up for new glasses, that we just don't have the money for otherwise.
I weighed the different ones after that...and I ended up going with ko-fi. I didn't feel comfortable with the patreon model, since thats a "pay me every month and get x in return" and I dunno. It felt kind of complicated, and like it was putting on some contractual stipulations on both ends that I didn't care for. So yeah. I've got a Ko-Fi now--for anyone that feels like dropping me a few dollars in tip over how much they like my writing. Its exactly what it says on the tin: A Tip Jar. The story will not be held hostage, I won't be 'gating' content, chapters will still be posted on the same update schedule, etc. At some point, when I finish the story, I might take up a friend's offer for helping me organize it for a printed copy, and maybe I'll figure out how to get that out to my readers too if they want one.
