When a Netflix movie about my little ponies has more nuance and insight than most of Earth's professional journalists... Maybe that's not saying much, but it does give a little hope. I especially liked the interplay between g4 lore and g5 lore. That's good mystery.
And while it was all obvious allegory, it wasn't the normal kind that gets shoveled down throats. That was nice. I was glad to see a decent understanding of the three main pillars of Western society, and how they've been corrupted, and who's doing that corruption. It wasn't perfect, nor was it particularly deep, and it certainly didn't make the villain interesting. But the three pony races work accurately for the subject. And the team behind the movie discerned a lot that became relevant during the lockdown which almost killed this movie.
Let's just say some families may balk at the symbolism and messages, but only if they get the wrong ideas twisted around. For example, there's a tractor-mech driven by a wannabe fascist, in a fascist uniform, and the inside of that mech is portrayed as an 18-wheeler's truck cab. A tired parent would be forgiven for seeing that as a misguided middle-finger toward truckers and the working class. But considering the tractor-mech was built when the demagogue seized the means of production, and enslaved the working class through fear, before "having to do everything himself..." it's apparent that the intended symbolism is damning people much higher up the leadership chain. And meanwhile, pegasi and celebritism was rich soil. But the unicorn angle was much more subtle. Can you guess what the unicorns represent in this movie?
Anyway, I had fun. I just wish this sopping gooey presentation wasn't the only story tackling these issues (Ah! But here comes Dune!). Now, let's unpack the film's messages: Get your heads out of social media, stop trusting leaders just because they say they have your best interests at heart, and remember that superstition is the dead-end that leads away from amazing revelations... But even gifted theorists can be wrong. And statistics may be the tool of researchers, but they're the weapon of politics.
Okay, I inserted that last one.
Now, I've got to go learn Haitian, catch the donkey that a PETA couple broke out of our pens, and continue all the writing and drawing that built up inside me during that depression stint. I could probably use pre-readers in the near future. Been writing a few thousand words a day for months.
This is such a good line. Good luck with the donkey!
And now we gotta tune in hoping to find out how things got the way they were lol
