Star Wars Visions: Thoughts and opinions. · 3:33pm Sep 23rd, 2021
So yesterday was the premiere Star Wars Visions, and I watched all of the first Season... twice. First in the original Japanese dub, then the English. For any of you who don't know what this is, Visions is an Anime Anthology on Disney Plus that's loosely based and set in the world of Star Wars. 7 studios made 9 episodes (so some made 2 episodes instead of one), none canonical to Star Wars, so there's no need to make a fuss over if they make or break the universe. Here's my personal opinions in each, and if the Japanese or English dub is better. Minor spoilers ahead.
The Duel: A really good beginning episode that really does feel inspired by Akira Kurosawa. But since this based on old black and white Samurai movies, definitely watch it in Japanese
Tatoonie Rhapsody: Super simple, but nothing too offensive. Had a chuckle seeing Boba Fett jam out though. Unless you want to hear Boba Fett again, definitely watch this in Japanese, especially for the last minute
The Twins: Pretty simple story, but filled with crazy animation during the duel between the twins themselves. This is one where both Performances are good, so feel free to watch in either language
The Village Bride: A pretty slow burn that's more exploring a different land. Like the last, both are good.
The Ninth Jedi: "What a twist!". But like the last 3, definitely flip a coin
T0-B1: A bit annoying, and I think they forgot some sound effects. I definitely prefer the English here, since the main lead isn't as annoying. Pike dealing with your baby vs another person's baby.
The Elder: A nice set up but just kinda ends. Japanese for the win here.
Lop & Ochõ: Seriously though Studio Ghibli made this, and got a bit teary eyed at the end. Prefer the Japanese dub just a bit more for Lop, but you can flip a coin as well.
Akakiri: The most trippiest looking one out of them all, but with drums that cancel out most of the dialogue, and has a pretty downer ending. The drums seem to cancel out the dialogue more for the Japanese dub than English, so there's that.
Overall, this series was really well made, and I hope there's a second season, and maybe a chance some of these can expand, since they all kinda end on a cliffhanger. My main complaint is the running time. Tatoonie Rhapsody is the shortest, 13 minutes, while the Ninth Jedi is the longest, 20, but on average, each episode is about 16 minutes, 15 without credits.
