Unintended activity: Google Drive · 11:33am Jul 28th, 2021
Last night, four years and ten days after I had to deal with Photobucket, I received this cryptic message from our alphabetic friends:
A security update will be applied to Drive
On September 13, 2021, Drive will apply a security update to make file sharing more secure. This update will change the links used for some files, and may lead to some new file access requests. Access to these files won't change for people who have already viewed them.
All my personal embedded images in my FiMFiction blog, as well as some on other sites, are shared via Google Drive. Most appeared on the magic patched list that Google presented me with, but not all, which makes me very suspicious about how well the “won’t change” part of their scheme will work, even though I removed the update from all the files.
Link rot is one of the unfortunate and frustrating parts of dealing with the internet, and I’d like to avoid it here as much as possible. So, should a future you see some broken images that lead back to Google, please send future me a note and we’ll see what we can do.
In the meantime, I may be looking into other means to store the data, perhaps Dropbox as iisaw suggested.
Maybe it will finally get rid of the dreaded Upstream Error I keep seeing. Probably not.
Sadly, GDrive has a much higher storage limit than Dropbox, though on the flipside, linking to Dropbox files is way easier.
Anyway, I saw this too, and removed the update from the 30 or so files it had random selected, most of which were card images. There's literally no pattern here, so I have no idea what this 'security update' could even be about.
