Of microphones and motorcycles · 2:31am May 29th, 2021
Hey all,
One of the things that I find annoying about the Fallout games is how characters have knowledge they realistically shouldn't. I'm thinking specifically of a conversation you can overhear in Fallout 4, where one raider mentions how he heard the sound of a motorcycle. Every single time I hear this conversation, it rubs me the wrong way. It's been 200+ years since motorcycles last worked, how the hell do you know what one sounds like? It's just a small detail, but something we take for granted today would be completely unknown to someone born post-apocalypse.
This is something I'm hoping to do right with Rusty. Not with Dew necessarily; who knows what technology, education, movies, etc. she had in the Enclave. But Rusty was born in the wasteland and should be missing a lot of the knowledge that prewar ponies had. Sure, he can recognize electronics, but all he would need to know as a scavenger is how valuable something might be, not the correct name for it. This is why I've tried to make him unsure about the names of things he comes across. Ema's microphone is a good example. He knows what it does, since there must have been a few floating around the wasteland, but the name is a much less important detail.
So there we go. My attempt to keep my characters' knowledge at the level it should be.
