I agree. These statements are very unhelpful in modern times. What does 'being a man' even mean? Does it mean having a certain set of reproductive organs? Conforming to society's stereotypes? Doing certain jobs that really shouldn't be gender discriminated (as WW2 demonstrated, you don't need a dong to be an engineer or construction worker, as a lot of factory work was done by women; Rosie the Riveter?).

How do the phrases "Be human" and "Be a person of integrity and responsibility" sound?

Much better. It's for similar reasons I have problems with the use of 'man' or 'men' to refer to all of humanity. Erm, hello, women exist, you know!
Can't say I agree with you, but at the same time I can't say that I don't see your point.
To me they're just phrases, no gender, no hate.
Now I'll admit just like everything it can and will be used to discriminate.
To me, "be a man" or "man up" is just a way to say toughen up or standup for yourself.
Other phrases and words with man in them are to me just words, no gender, no hate, nothing discriminatory.
A few of those words include.
Manhole
Manager
Mankind
Manhandle
Mankind
To me just words.
Now I'll admit, the phrases you talked about can and will be used for the reasons you say, but only by hateful people. But that's just my opinion. Who knows I might change my outlook, but for now I'm just always most of the time in the middle, looking at both sides.
