Captains, Queens, and Princesses by protopony has some amazing world building in it. As the name implies, the story focuses on all of the ruling alicorn princesses along with their respective guard captains. The character voices are right on and the stakes keep getting higher.
One example of the wonderful world building is protopony’s presentation of Shining Armor and Tempest Shadow (or Fizzlepop as she is correctly referred to).
CQP reminds us that Shining Armor is a real bad-flank! He is one of the physically largest unicorns in cannon. Combined with his guard training, it makes sense that he is a formidable melee fighter. His amazing shields demonstrate that Shining has extremely powerful magic, so he also likely has powerful offensive and utility spells as well. As former Captain of the Royal Guard, and now Warrior Prince of the Crystal Empire, it also makes sense that Shinning is an expert tactician and strategist.
CQP leverages the trope that Tempest Shadow is Captain of Twilight’s Guard. Tempest is also one of the latest unicorns in cannon, and she has demonstrated that she is also a bad-flank in combat. With her broken horn, Tempest likely is better at powerful bombardments than she is at precision offensive or defensive magic. As former leader of the Storm King's forces, Tempest is likely also a master tactician and strategist, as well as someone who is willing to use powerful magical items and even “fight dirty” in order to win.
Putting Shining Armor and Tempest in the same conflict elevates them both!
