Pretty sure everyone's seen the announcement for Gen5 by now. Taking place a few generations after Friendship is Magic. Old characters have probably passed into legend. Main character is a social activist. Might be good. Might suck. Not enough information out to properly judge yet.
As for whether or not Twilight Sparkle is alive in this era..... Dunno yet. Maybe. Depends on the writers at Hasbro. I mean let's be honest why wouldn't they want those Nostalgia Bux? So I put the probability very high. I wonder about my Cadence though....
I mean the whole Twilight outliving her friends is causing arguments again but I gotta be honest. I don't know or care. It's an unhealthy attachment issue I used to have about it. Much drama for a toy commercial by a MegaCorporation.
I'll just mark my fics as alternative Universe to be safe.
Hasbro may own the franchise but they don't write the episodes, they approve them. A different team is in charge of writing and making the episodes (like for FiM it was DHX, not sure who it'll be this time).
From a synopsis I heard from someone who said they saw a fake screening, Twilight is no longer around. (Unless she's the one alicorn who's against the racism...)
And if it sucks we can always FanonDiscontinuity it. It's not even from the same crew as FiM, but can be taken as canon if we wish and there's no overwhelming inconsistencies, just like the Season 10 comics (though they will likely conflict. I didn't hear of anything zebra in the synopsis)

I don't think that it's going to be that big of a leap in time. I believe they previously said that G4 ponies will make appearances here and there while still maintaining focus on the new cast. At most it will probably be the same skip as the Last Problem.
