Interlude 2 Up! (December 26th) · 12:16pm Dec 26th, 2020
Our second Interlude is now up! Happy Boxing Day, to those who celebrate it!This features our second check-in with Princess Twilight Sparkle, to see how things are going on her end of things.
To elaborate a bit more on what I state in the author’s notes: for the purposes of this story, I headcanon the Equestria Girls Earth to be functionally identical to ours save for a few specific differences:
1. Everywhere uses pony puns or names similar to the primary FIM universe. So for example, instead of the United States of America, it’s the Amareican Union. Expect a few other basic puns, like Ewerupe, or Qilin. And yes, I realize that FIM went with Kirin, not Qilin, but there’s a reason I changed it. I don’t like the idea of personifying a species in one universe as a race in another universe. There are all sorts of problematic elements associated with that, and it doesn’t exactly hold up even in show: see, for example, Mistmane.
2. Politics are just a tad bit different in this world, thanks to the differences in appearances versus our world’s humans. As such, things tend to separate on more of a cultural association than appearance association. This will pretty much never come up as anything other than “Applejack is Southern” for this story, but I want it established in case I decide to set further works in this same universe. I’m well aware this could carry its own set of problematic elements, but I will do my very best to avoid anything of that nature.
3. A few bits of technology work slightly differently, owing to the fact that Equestrian magic has been leaking into their universe, in one way or another, even without the general populace or scientific community realizing that’s what it is. This is my explanation for things that are otherwise completely out of place, such as the transformer car that Vinyl used in Rainbow Rocks.
As for the general situation regarding how much the world knows about Equus and Equestria: it’s pretty much zilch. That’s a bit hard to justify, what with how they’ve literally transformed in front of massive audiences in an amusement park and taken an entire cruise ship full of people through a wild portal and back again but they manage it somehow. Seriously, I cannot state enough how much Spring Breakdown ruined its own premise and wasted its potential, creating absurd situations while at the same time providing a key aspect to this story.
What does all of this mean for the story as a whole thus far? Not too much, other than, as stated in the author’s notes, my reason for excluding the ability to use satellite imagery and international cooperation to find the ship. But I wanted to lay this all out in case I decide to set future stories in the same universe. There could be sequel potential, is what I’m saying. Nothing guaranteed, but I’d like to toss out the seeds, just in case.
