really couldn't find a decent answer so far... does it really matter if, say, you don't want to buy the game... pretty sure you could still play it, as long as you didn't want to play in the STEAM-supported servers.
But anyway, chances are either one of us would lag something fierce if we'd want to play together. What country were you from again? Pretty sure there was the matter of that as well.

544539 Sorry, I wasn't all that clear. Or reasonable... I was talking about a cracked version I managed to play online with, one that was being updated periodically (but was a real bitch to install...) I can't give you any name since I can't remember it (thus I can't really find it anymore)

I thought maybe I could use that to play online with a paid STEAM version, once I found it.
