    A personal social museum

Hey, everyone. Sorry for being so quiet lately. I've been a little tired in general, and I've wanted to take a break from fanfiction for a while, not a big break, mind you, just for a few weeks, and I've sort of been doing that, but I've also checked in most days to check comments, and nagging myself that I should write, so... it's like the worst of both worlds, not doing anything, but also not

    So very tired

One of the reasons I don't write more news like this than I do is that the latest blog post is going to be on my profile's front page and the latest news about my writing for quite a while, but I still felt like I should write something. Because... well, there seems to be some people who genuinely want to read what I write, weird as that feels to say out loud. I mean, there are a few

Sunset Shimmer at Hogwarts story mission statement

I am not feeling very eloquent today, or least not this moment, but I've decided to nonetheless try and give an update on what's going on, and why I'm writing an crossover where Sunset Shimmer ends up at Hogwarts and not something else.

So why this story and not other stuff? What gives?

    physical recovery period

okay, so, i have not been in an accident or something like, it was relatively minor operation, and it has been in the works for a while, but i got a summons on a very short notice.

so right now i am typing and using the mouse with my left hand, and i am not super enthusiastic about stuff since my right wrist hurts quite a bit, so i will be brief.

    Just a general update

You know how there's this sentiment that a lot of people don't go to the hospital even when they should?

I'm not entirely convinced about that's a valid feedback to give in general. I mean, the medical community have enough on their plate, even without pandemics, without everyone going to see a medical professional every time they have the flu, or a stomach bug, or something.

okay, so, i have not been in an accident or something like, it was relatively minor operation, and it has been in the works for a while, but i got a summons on a very short notice.

so right now i am typing and using the mouse with my left hand, and i am not super enthusiastic about stuff since my right wrist hurts quite a bit, so i will be brief.

i had a ganglion cyst, if i got the term right, on my right wrist. a fluid that separates the bones was leaking and forming little sacks which were annoying and a little sensitive, and now i've come back from a little bit of surgery, if that term applies, where the doctor cut open the back of my wrist down to the joint to make it form scar tissue and hopefully stop the leaking. one of the downsides of cutting this deep is that it is... put simply, kinda painful. even with anaesthetics it was unpleasant, and now that has worn off and i am stuck with painkillers, which is not really enough honestly.

this is day one of course, and hopefully it will get better soon, but from here it looks likely that i will not spend a lot of time typing. just this message is taking long enough. but since i like responding to comments and dont want people feeling ignored, i felt that i should explain why i will be kind of silent for a time.

stitches are scheduled to come out in two weeks, and i just hope i dont get an infection, the high risk of which is another downside of cutting into the joint. just managed to shower with my arm in a plastic bad. quite the adventure, and not in a fun way.

be back later and hopefully feeling better. talk to you all then.

Here's hoping for no infection. Everything else would be a fair price, assuming it works as intended. Best wishes!

Wishing you the best recovery and the least pain in times to come!

Question, have you ever heard of a trackball mouse? It's a sort of mouse where the mouse stays in one place and you direct the cursor by scrolling a ball with your thumb.

I'm bad at describing things, go look it up. Anyway, it sounds like you don't want to be moving your wrist, and this thingamajig is what I use.

Hope you feel better soon!

and you direct the cursor by scrolling a ball with your thumb.

All the trackball mice I've seen have the primary mouse button under your thumb, and you roll the ball with your fingers.

I'm bad at describing things, go look it up.

As for what they look like:

  1. Here's the current version of one I lucked into after wanting one as a kid. (The ambidextrous Logitech Trackman Marble. I have the old beige version with fewer buttons. The trackball is red with black dots because the first versions were early optical tech in an era of mechanical trackballs and now it's just a stylistic trademark.)
  2. Here's a newer (but still ancient) revision of one I used on a Macintosh SE as a little kid (the Kensington Turbo Mouse)... I really need to collect one of those some day.

My understanding is that they're typically used in professional contexts because they lend themselves well to certain types of precision control that traditional-form gaming mice achieved using things like PTFE feet (no whole-hand weight pressing down on the part that has to move and amplifying the static friction)... and, of course, because, if you're mousing all day for a career, it avoids having to waggle your wrist around.

This is the one I've been using for the past few years.

You pretty much just rest your hand on it and let your thumb do all the work. (aside from clicking on stuff.)

Ahh, yeah. The non-ambidextrous descendants of the original Logitech Trackman Marble (Models T-CH11 and T-AH11). I'd forgotten about those.

EDIT: Also, I got nerd-sniped on the topic of the old one I had boxed up, so if anyone wants to use a trackball with two buttons and no wheel comfortably on Linux, I just blogged about the setup script I pulled together.

(Basically, getting a usable configuration of "emulate a wheel" and "emulate three buttons using two" and some tweaks like enabling both vertical and horizontal scrolling on the emulated wheel and tweaking the sensitivity so I can use scroll-wheel tab switching without physical detents.)

I'm using it now and it's surprisingly natural and convenient.

Get well soon, that's an order :pinkiecrazy:

I had one in my left wrist, but lucky me it went away...eventually :fluttershyouch:

My best wishes for a swift recovery.

Alright, here's the latest: I no longer need to keep my hand raised all the time, most normal positions don't hurt (I'm still following doctor's orders and don't do more than very light lifting) and I can even type fairly well despite the bandages. It's a little sore, but that's nothing compared to outright painful like it was previous days. Hopefully the fact that it hurts less and less means that there's no infection, so I assume I'm keeping the bandages clean enough. Curious about what the stitches look like underneath the bandages, and I hope the itching don't get too bad. Only the fingers poke out of the bandages and using soap without getting anything wet is quite the challenge.

Thank you. No long-term setbacks I hope

Thank you

It's actually getting a lot better. I managed to get to a progress-blocking bug in the Baldur's Gate 3 early access, twice, using my left hand. Still, we'll see how my wrist feels in the long term, so it could be worth keeping in mind. Really like my current Logitech-set though.

5376876
Could still be something for me even if it's not for "gaming", since I mostly play turn based or semi-turn based games. I'd need to save up though.

5376931
Hopefully it won't come back. Mine popped by itself and came back several times. This was before I had the surgery, but doc said it formed scar tissue which made it harder to pop, she had to take the extra-extra-sharp needle to empty it. It was almost kinda funny to see someone struggle to, in a sense, damage you with a sharp object.

Thank you :yay:

Hey that's great to hear! But make sure you take it easy, lots of folks have made their issues worse by rushing recovery at the last moment.
