Any fans of Nine Inch Nails? · 9:17pm Sep 11th, 2020
I'm a huge fan of Nine Inch Nails. Actually, it was a Nine Inch Nails album that originally inspired Who We Become (The Fragile) and I use their album titles as working titles for my stories. Finding Home's working title was Pretty Hate Machine, as an example. They're one of my all-time favorite bands, and I took on a NIN project recently that was finished yesterday.
The idea was simple, if time-consuming. From 1988 to 1991 the band toured in support of Pretty Hate Machine, and there's no live album from this time. There are, however, a ton of fan recordings (sixty-three, to be exact). So I downloaded all of them and listened through making notes on songs. Then I took the ones I deemed worth coming back to, and I listened to them again, eliminating them one my one until I had the best version of every song that was performed in that time period, creating my own live album out of what was available. It's not perfect. These were fan recordings made thirty years ago when NIN wasn't the huge band they became on their next album; it was never going to sound like a professionally recorded live album. Some songs in particular just don't have a great version of them available (songs only performed in 88 and 89; by the 90 performances, we got better quality recordings). But I think all in all, it sounds pretty good.
The whole thing is up on my YouTube channel, with a download link in the description of every video. If you're a fan of Nine Inch Nails and live music, maybe give it a listen. Here's a highlight:
As an enormous Rush fan, I totally understand. I have a similar collection of recordings of independent origin, and while I've not made a song comparison, I've sampled a number of overall performances and selected the best recording from each tour. And kept interesting others, like when power went out or a good solo or something.

I'm not surprised Rush has similar fan recordings like this. I initially had the idea to do this for Pink Floyd, but there were always standout performances of their tour already; I could get the sound of each tour through one particularly high-quality fan-recorded concert without having to make a mix like this. For Nine Inch Nails, that's true of many of their tours (or there are official live albums for some of them), but not so for their first tour cycle, so I decided the only way I would ever be satisfied was by making my own mix. It was a fun project, and one I'm glad I saw to completion
