Why I write fanfiction · 12:13am Feb 9th, 2020

Why do I write fanfiction?

Why do I spend precious time drafting, writing, and editing something that only appeals to a very, very small percentage of humanity?

Well, I guess the easy answer is because I enjoy it. Ever since childhood, I've had an overactive imagination. I'd say about seventy percent of my early years were spent staring into space, lost in my own little world while the other kids played. In my head, I wasn't some lonely, geeky kid from SeaTac with the charisma of a potato; I was a hero, enclosed in a suit of power armor, flying from one fantastic world to another, facing off against all sorts of evil, diabolical creatures, and promptly blowing them to bits with my suits' arm-cannon. Adolescence was more of the same, only with more naked women.

When I wasn't exercising my imagination, I was trying to find ways to bring it into the physical world. It started with legos and crayons during playtime, moved on to colored pencils and clay during art class, then, late into my high school years, I found the final growth medium for my imagination: the written word. Whenever inspiration struck, I'd whip out the decorated composition notebook that served as my journal, looked around for something to write with, and started pouring raw imagination onto the pages.

Years passed. I decided to start sharing my work with the world, posting some of my work online on sites like deviantART and the like, but it wasn't enough. I'd get a smattering of comments and views and that was it. I needed more than that...

That's where FimFic and fanfiction come in. Here, when I post my work, people actually READ it. I'm not drowned out by the other, more popular artists. I don't have to go from profile to profile, begging people to read my latest story. I just post it and wait for people to respond. Even better, Hasbro has done half of the work for me: they've given me a pre-made universe and characters, which I can play with to my heart's content.

In short,

Ok, the essay's over. How 'bout some music?
