    On Anxiety

If you see this post and haven't read Anxiety yet, then be aware that everything below the break discusses it and includes spoilers, as far as that matters for a story like this.

This story is in many ways deeply personal and is heavily influenced by my own experiences, and so there are several important acknowledgements to make.

If the Nightmare Ever Ended · 11:53am Jan 16th, 2020

One very well might think that a story that has not been updated in almost seven years written by an author who has not been seen in several years would be dead.

I thought it was dead, and I'm the author.

I think I was wrong.

I will admit that when I first considered returning to Fimfiction in some fashion If the Nightmare Came True was very low on my list of priorities, if it was on it at all. However, it seems to have gotten much more attention than I ever would have expected in my absence.

Which means it got any attention at all, really.

But a piece of writing advice I once saw was to finish any story you've ever written, even if the ending is simply that a meteor fell from the sky and killed everyone. That is not the ending I have planned, but the point stands, I think.

So does this mean that I've started writing the next chapter?

No, but I did do something I hadn't done in a long time: I read what I had already written. As a writer, I think it is always a bit painful to read old work. You, or at least I, spot all the little things that could have been handled differently, and there is an urge to never stop revising until everything is perfect. I do sound much more eloquent in my head than I seem to be on the page.

That's especially true when looking at what 15-16 year old me wrote. I'd like to think I've improved some since then, even if just a little.

So what does this mean?

Unfortunately, past me was really, really bad at notes and outlining, so I'm not sure exactly what I had planned to do. So I'll probably polish the early chapters up a little bit while I try to reimmerse myself in the story. I'll treat it a bit like I would if I were inheriting a story from someone else, though, so the key plot points will remain untouched. I can't say that the story will end up where my past self would have taken it, but hopefully that will be for the best.

In the meantime, I do have some shorter pieces I'll probably get around to uploading, but I do have some ideas already for how to continue If the Nightmare Came True. I can't promise the progress will be very fast, but for the first time in years there is indeed progress.
