    Of Jell-O and Laser Sharks

Hmmm. Okay. You guys ever have a week that feels like trying to outpace a shark while you're both trapped in Jell-O?

Then you say, "Butterscotch, it's only been two days since you've seen your awesome girlfriend." Ha. ha.

Equestrian Physics: Runes · 3:01pm Sep 21st, 2019

I don't need sleep, I need answers.

So, as I was talking to my dad about Equestrian Physics this morning--as normal people do, normally, on a normal basis--he came to the concept that every fantasy world has one "get out of logic free" card, but Equestria violates that basis, specifically in the concept of telekinesis and a written language. As, even working in the concept that there is an alternate dimension with multiple races of fantasy creatures, primarily centered around colorful equine with human intelligence and physics altered to their anatomy, there would theoretically be no reason for those who couldn't manipulate objects magically to write, and there might not even be a use for quills in the long run.

Let's break this down further. In DEI Caboose's Something's Always Watching, Twilight uses Ellipse's Vocal Instruction to enchant the quill to inscribe her dictations for her, and in the lovely ocalhoun's Blink (of which I had actually read aloud to my dad earlier, prompting the Equestrian Physics discussion), she mentions that she is able to use teleportation, a spell that...well, a highly complex spell that utilizes all thaumaphysical properties Equestria has to offer. Therefore, although using a quill uses less magic, why could she not copy a longer document or inscribe a letter directly onto the page rather than using ink and quills? Surely in the context of a highly skilled magic user, that would be akin to utilizing a crossbow in weaponry--hindering and pointless, when you could simply throw the object as far with a telekinetic field in a fraction of the time.

You say, "Butterscotch, what about the pegasi and Earth Ponies? You wouldn't forget two-thirds of the Equestrian Race, would you?"

Equestria writes in runes, and to address a specific pony, in small sketches. (Markless foals get chibi sketches of their faces, much like in Cheerilee's classroom in earlier seasons, and the others seem to get their cutie marks, or if they can't do that, let's say they spell it out--otherwise, it would be a little sillier why Sweetie Belle could think Big Mac's Hearts and Hooves package was for her when she has a bell nowhere in her cutie mark.) Pegasi and Earth Ponies usually write with their mouths, which I'd have to imagine takes skill and effort, but given that all foals must have to give oral reports, tell stories, or write their names, everyone must learn at least how to write basic runes and sketches.

Now, what my dad is parrying is that that wouldn't make sense for an Equestrian world, particularly one that can't always walk and carry an item at the same time without saddlebags, but can walk and talk at the same time; it would make more sense for it to be an oral tradition among Earth Ponies and Pegasi (see: Rainbow Dash spreading word on Celestia's play to all of Ponyville in a few minutes, the CMC looking for a special somepony for Cheerilee in a song, songs used to relay information, the campfire tales of Mistmane, Rockhoof, and Flash Magnus) and for the magic users or citizens with opposable claws to dictate that information.

Any thoughts? Comments, questions, concerns, free cupcakes?
