Name Help? · 5:55am Aug 11th, 2019
I'm writing a new story that even now has exceeded the length of my longest posted story, but then everything slowed down and stopped. It's not that I don't have any ideas as the story has a decent outline, but it turns out that what has stopped me are names - I simply don't have enough names for my characters. These are all ponies, but even so my mind has been in "write it" mode and not brainstorming mode, so would someone be so kind as to dump for me a list of pony names that I can use?
..aren't those names meant to be used as ultrashort descriptions of what this particular pony does/feels ? A bit like cutiemark, but in namespace? I was thinking that for this role of names ponies probably should assign (or choose?) names relatively late in their life.. or may be they have more than two names (one string given by parents/friends/etc, and another one they create for themselves) during their lifetime ..?
If their names reflect their world (and 'professions' they have) - then some of those names will make little sense in our world (if they related to some magical concepts for example), and names perfectly correct for our current world can only be stylized into equestrian use ?

True, and my main characters get that treatment of being carefully examined. I spent a week plotting out my main's personality and only gave him a name when I figured out who he is. However, I need background ponies. It is possible that their names could help me develop their roles, but like I said, my mind is is write mode.

Hm, only name I can come up with is .. Gifting Northwind. Or may be Plentful Carpet. (relative of mgical carpet, not for flying but for creating all kind of interesting things on it apparently out of just air...). On the other hoof, may be ponies will focus their attention more on subtle dimensions of their lives, because obvious things will be quite obvious? something like Aperiodical Freshwave ...for example .....

I've been laughing for a while because "plentiful carpet" could be an innuendo for "much pubic hair". I have no idea what "Aperiodical Freshwave" means. "Northwind" on it's own sounds like a good name. "Gifting Wind" could be another.

Yeah, attempt at translating some russian 'tale/folklore memes' into English definitely can make some good laugh!

Aperiodic Freshwave just explains what i feel ...sometimes, at irregular intervals, I feel like I found something fresh!
Guess today I'm on RAM page ......

"I simply don't have enough names for my characters" is an interesting problem.
I haven't read your draft, so I am left to speculate. I wonder if you might have more characters than you need, or than your readers can easily keep track of? But that's only a speculation.
Because pony names are usually significantly related to
forthe character's other characteristics, I would be reluctant to ask for a dump of names from afar to give my little ponies. Maybe you can use placeholder names for now, while you're writing your first draft?
