Trotcon Day 1: Friday’s on the Phone to Sunday · 3:36am Jul 20th, 2019

Well, it’s that time of year again, where the rare Brony gathers in great herds, also know as cons, to share their love for one another in displays of nature’s beauty and majesty. At least that’s what the brochure says, anyways. And so I find myself at TrotCon, looking back at the first day, or half day I suppose, of events.

OleGreyMane and I hit the road to Abbey Road, and proceeded to have an interesting discussion about and listening session to generational music. We arrived in good time, the weather this year being murderously hot however we quickly ate our packed lunches then retreated indoors to seek the glorious relief of air conditioning. Naturally, we got signed in, and immediately afterwards ran into Robbcakeran, Admiral Biscuit, & co. . The shirt and top hat make the Admiral easy to spot, and Robb’s glowing personality and ever present drink are impossible to miss. So I think I may have called some random guy the Admiral by mistake at check in. Sorry dude! My brain overheated I think!

Anyhow, we were presently engaged in conversation on matters of stories in progress, wheel wrights, and death by musket ramrod. You know, the usual writers chit chat. OleGreyMane and NewGreyMare were also talking about some G1 & G3 ponies we have arranged to have here restore, as well. Anyhow at some point OleGreyMane went off to secure the room, and Rob made me an official shit poster. We also admired the latest Piny figma from Japan, which is really a piece of art (definitely out of my budget though and I always worry about those things breaking if I so much as look at them funny, so I’ve never actually bought similar statuettes before when I’ve had the chance.).

I then attended my first panel, which dealt with previous generations of ponies. In spite of technology not playing nice, the panel was pretty good. I had a fruitful discussion about the latest G4/1 (?) retro pony pack (consensus is its G1 style versions of G4 with more G3 style bodies). I also learned from Spitfire, Fiaura"s wife from the UK, that at one point in the 1990s her school had a literal pony black market where ponies could be traded for contraband including cigarettes! Scandalous indeed.

Then there was the Writers Waffling Willingly about Writing panel, which had some very interesting moments. While it went quite blue towards the end, there was discussion on the subjects of chapters, and upload times that I found quite useful and overall I had a lot of fun! The blue parts came up from discussion about other fiction sites, like An Archive of Our Own, and some such that were interesting to me simply because I may at some point write fan fiction in other franchises as well and it was interesting to learn where I might post it. I laughed when Rob said fanfiction.net hadn’t been upgraded since the Clinton Administration!

I linked back up with OGM to check out the obligatory VA panels. Ellie Rae was set to Ellie Rae, and was busy simultaneously attacking and ice cream cone and a coffee drink I suspect was almost as much sugar as it was coffee. Her effusive, infectious personality always seems to steal the show, and I’d spotted her earlier in the day. I imagine her “minder” will be the most exhausted person at the con, I cannot fathom the idea of someone being able to keep up with her! It was nice to see both Bill Newton and Katrina Salisbury. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing Katrina tomorrow at the autograph session as she is a fellow Type 1 Diabetic, with an insulin pump! Yona has always been one of my favorites and this discovery makes me really happy. Representation is important people!

After a ramen dinner, and divesting of various bits and pieces of equipage in the room, we returned for the evening fare. This was mainly seeing the end of the con runners panel, and a rather tipsy DarklyCute and company opine on the state of cons and the upcoming last BronyCon. This was followed by a panel on StarTrek & MLP which sort of wound up being about Picard and Discovery more than anything else... personally I would have preferred if it was a more fan meet up type of thing rather than a actual panel. As it was there were some interesting discussions there, though I’m certain OGM was bored beyond reason by the speeches in high nerd that were being bandied about. Either way we retreated to our room, where now we rest in anticipation of yet another awesome day tomorrow. Good night everypony!
