Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is my latest dive into anime and boy howdy is it a doozy
The Homunculi in particular were a very interesting character study and, though many say that they're monsters, really, are they? How much control do they have over their lives with Father standing over them? How different would they be if he wasn't there to dictate to them who they are and what they can/can't do?
Greed got away from Father's influence because, as a representation of greed, he always wants more: he sees that there's more, wants it, and then goes to get it. How about the others?
Wrath was forced into his role, seeing no other way of life but to follow the man who made him less than human, which pissed him off, but what can he do? Pride is arrogant and the firstborn, despite his appearance, seeing himself as second to Father in terms of power. The one thing that these two admittedly share, in the end, is how they both came to love Mrs. Bradley (even if they’re both extremely tsundere about it).
Lust is derived from, not just craving sexual pleasure, but all sorts of pleasure, and Lust gets the most pleasure by participating in combat. Her lust is bloodlust and she’s more than happy to bend or even break Father’s rules if it means she can get an blood-pumping kill. And yet, despite this, she takes on a sisterly/motherly role towards Gluttony and Envy, giving them guidance and making sure that they stay out of trouble. She likely stays for them, otherwise she likely would’ve strayed if given enough time, like Greed.
Sloth is forced to work, constantly, and he has really no say in the matter. Everything is a ‘bother’ to him. How long has he been down in those tunnels? Does he ever get the chance to see the others? Does he care? Is he allowed to care? Poor Sloth
Gluttony is a child in mind, physically looking like a big, hairless two-year old who is curious about everything, but consumed by an uncontrollable hunger via Father’s experiments that leads him to eat just about anything. Even humans. But outside of that, he’s basically a sweetheart, especially with Lust.
Envy is basically a kid, mentally and emotionally, heck s/he even looks it, physically (you know, if kids were that buff). Envy is in the same family as greed and lust, but while greed is about getting things you want because you want them and lust is finding an outlet for your pleasure, envy is about wanting something, but being unable to attain it because you believe that you can’t. Envy is the most loyal to Father, indoctrinated the most to his cause like a child desperate for love, and so believes that s/he can’t make bonds the way that a human can: seeing the best and worst of humanity, seeing their ability to forgive and grow stronger, s/he wants that so bad, but it’s off-limits to them...and so they grow bitter, resentful, and lash out every chance they get.
Father himself is a Lord of Life: he has his fingers in everything in regards to Amestris and manipulates everyone in it to further his goal to become the perfect being, creating the Philosopher’s Stone through human life and creating the Homunculi through his blood/soul. Since the Homunculi are his Minions, they’re sort of like the Felt in that respect, representing a part of Father and the Alchemical process (not that I know them all by heart).
Greed is an Heir of Life: wanting more, getting more, until he finally becomes a human (well, possesses one, but still).
Wrath is a Mage of Life: the most human of the Homunculi and able to more or less see the future moves of his opponents.
Pride is a Thief of Life: he manipulates from the shadows, stealing the agency of Riza Hawkeye and, outside of Mrs. Bradley, only cares about himself.
Lust is a Knight of Life: she breaks the rules to benefit herself, but also cares for Gluttony and keeps Envy from going overboard.
Sloth is a Page of Life: having no real say in their own life in terms of what to do, they are controlled by Father and never truly achieve their potential as a person.
Gluttony is a Bard of Life: he’s childish and laidback, but has the ability to nullify any lifeform by consuming it.
Envy is a Prince of Life: hating humans and themselves, their job is to instigate as much chaos and death as possible.
