50 Years Ago Today, The Saturn V Rocket Carried Mankind to the Moon and Back Again · 4:17am Jul 17th, 2019
... okay, so, technically, the whole rocket didn't take Neil, Buzz, and Mike all the way back to Earth.
That was the Lunar Ascent Module, and then the Command Module.
One of these two can be seen in model form in my profile picture, behind which and to the left is the book Ignition! An Informal History of Liquid Rocket Propellant, which is available on Amazon at the link provided. (This blog post not sponsored by anyone ever)
It's rather technical in nature, but even if you're not a rocket scientist, it's an interesting read.
Anywho. Fifty years ago, we pink hairless apes went to the friggin' moon and came back alive, loaded down with rocks and science. If that doesn't fascinate you, I don't know what will. Go read the book, or go watch First Man or Apollo 11 or something on YouTube about this magnificent and spectacular achievement of science, physics, and good 'ol human perseverance and gumption.
Don't know what gumption is? Go watch Forrest Gump. If you did, and still don't know what gumption is, well... it's when someone sticks to their guns and just keeps going and going when everyone says they can't or won't or shouldn't, regardless of the risk, or perhaps because what they stand to gain is so great as to make the risk seem as nothing.
Or maybe just to prove that it can be done, and that they shall be the ones to do it.
Damn the torpedoes.
