WARNING! SPOILERS FOR COSMOS IDW COMIC STORY ARC AHEAD!
Okay. First and foremost. I HATE the Cosmos story-arc, I did not consider this arc worth my money (mostly for turning Discord from a sadistic bully who Fluttershy made grow a conscience to a misguided prankster). But the final battle DOES include Cosmos turning the heroes left and right into things. Including AJ and the CMC into a merry-go-round.

While I hated the arc, I love transformation, and this gave me an idea if anyone is interested.

I'd pay money for a story where it turns out that unlike the others AJ and the CMC's souls were permanently altered and they're now a pony carousel in pony bodies and WANT to return to what's now their true form and go to length to reach it... (Also feeling increasingly uncomfortable when they're away from each other). This is meant to be a transformation/mental change story.
Anyone interested?

I wouldn't be uninterested per SE, but that requires me to accept Cosmos's existence whitewashing what Discord did.

Oh I agree, that's a turn off for me too. But thankfully, the idea is that Cosmos herself wouldn't logically appear (unless she's the one the CMC and AJ go to). And given this is fanfiction land, a few tweaks that Discord was feeding Fluttershy the Revised version (IE, Discord is the one doing the white washing, and is suffering from self-serving memory. Discord's real reason for being against killing is because you can't drive a corpse insane, and corpses can't run around like rats in a maze. Discord doesn't want to squash bugs because he prefers to torment them!) can make up for it.
I'd imagine AJ and the CMC are unique in that they were technically turned into a single object, unlike the others (even if they were all separate parts of that object). Thus why they'd feel uncomfortable when away from each other, they're away from parts of themselves. And being flesh and blood ponies is now the unnatural state.

Hmm... I might be interested. Just reading that prompt, I can imagine the creeping sense of wrongness going through their minds, as they move further and further away from what a sane individual would see as normal. Maybe a scene where they all stand in a circle, and go around, maybe a part where they build a rotating platform to stand on, and begin to make it more extravagant from there, eventually going so far as to attach themselves with poles...
It kind of depends on what tone and outcome you want to have from this story, but yeah, I can see myself writing that.
How much are you offering?
I would probably connect this with dysphoria, because that's what they would be feeling, the feeling of wrongness because they are clearly meant to be a carousel, yet they are separate and not a carousel. I can imagine the pain they feel, like a part of their very Soul has been broken away, but not as if they contain the whole, but as if they are the piece that has broken off, desperate to get back to its rightful place. I can imagine them feeling woefully incomplete without each other, unable to focus on an individual life when they are supposed to be bound to each other, moving in an infinite circle. I can imagine the very act of walking, moving around being a chore for them, that they are meant to be suspended from poles, ridgid, going around on a circular platform as it slides along its track. I can imagine that creeping sense of isolation as they realize that no other Pony will understand what they are going through, the other ponies attempting to convince them that this is crazy only driving them away, into the isolated state in which state finally make their attempt at becoming a carousel once again.
Like I said, the I would come and tone of this story would really depend on what you would want it to be. I could dial up the horror, I could make it really introspective, I could make it light and Whimsical, A Slice of Life, I could even make it a comedy, though I think I prefer introspective horror...
Just to be clear, were you thinking of having them actually succeed in becoming a carousel on some level? Because that would be the kind of ending I would be most interested in writing...

I wasn't thinking of making it bloody, more just psychological body horror, that they are obsessed with turning themselves into something inanimate, but, as I said, it wouldn't have to have a horrific tone, though I don't think I can pull that out entirely seeing as the concept itself is so dark.
