We got spoiled again. · 1:37pm May 22nd, 2019
I was sorta hoping that Season Nine would progress without too many leaks, but then Italy went ahead and aired the first half of the season before the US did. Stupid Italy with its Leaning Tower and superlative dubbing facilities. Anyway, I'm getting caught up on the remainder of the season, and I've got a few thoughts.
Sweet and Smoky isn't a bad episode, and it actually provided another bit of Hilarity in Hindsight for my works. It turns out that heat is a vital part of the process for hatching dragon eggs. I do have a small issue with their decision to develop and reform Garble, though - covering up your insecurities doesn't excuse smashing phoenix eggs. At least, I don't think so.
I'm neither here nor there about Going to Seed or Student Counsel, but neither are bad episodes. I imagine that I'll feel the same way about Between Dark and Dawn.
The Last Crusade...egads. I'd given up on the show introducing us to Scootaloo's parents, and certainly didn't expect to see Lofty or Holiday. I do wish the show hadn't taken so dang long to do it, however, and I doubt I'm ever going to be accepting of their parenting decisions (or lack thereof). And that goes for all four of them.
Anyway, aside from that special and the Equestria Girls stuff, I guess we're back on hiatus. And I've got some juggling to do.
I wonder if they hesitated to show her Aunts because the uptight would have complained about same sex guardians in a kids show. They back pedaled on Derpy pretty quick.
But for a final season? Go all out say the things you want, make us remember the things that are great. Wish they weren’t so chicken about it but there it is.
I haven't yet watched the episodes yet, but this being the Age of the Internet and Spoilers, I ended up being made aware of it all anyway.
Here are some thoughts of mine pertaining to these episodes:
In regard to Garble, I'm of two minds. On the one hand, yes, you make a very salient point - his actions in his first episode, not to mention of course the one introducing Ember, really mark him as a bastard. On the other though... I'm actually fairly OK towards the idea of him getting some depth or perspective down the road. Not to sweep his past deeds under the rug of course; my own thoughts towards Garble are more along the lines of Discord... that he'll never be truly "good"... just less of what he was before.
In regard to The Last Crusade... Holy hell, I did NOT expect them to ever actually straight-up give us Scootaloo's family onscreen. I do agree with you, that yeah, sadly, they're not really good parent material. Unfortunately to be expected, given the nature of their jobs and their attachment to it, this kind of thing tends to happen with long-distance work and all. That being said, I'm very amused that Scoots is the child of Pony Jane Goodall and Pony Mick Dundee / Steve Irwin.

I suspect they didn't so much hesitate about the aunts as they simply didn't come up with them until prior to producing Season Eight. Lofty and Holiday were featured in the books and comics beforehand, however. As for complaints about a gay couple in a cartoon aimed at little kids, well, they were subtle about it. Plus this is a cable show, so that had to help things a little.

I'm good with Garble being more than just a jerk dragon too. I just don't want him to be whitewashed.
And amusingly enough, I can't help but think of the odd story where Fluttershy was a guardian for Scootaloo. I'd bet she'd love to chat up Scoots' canon parents.

Subtle is good. Shows how real it is.
