Thinking of the past in the future · 7:41pm Apr 16th, 2019
So good news, I finally finished a grueling class and managed to get an A in it, so I've got about a week or two of mostly free time (still need to find a job). So expect updates coming.
Now on to the main topic. With MLP:FiM coming to a close, I was just thinking will the activity on this site wind down, will everyone here start to lose interest? I don't know, but then I started thinking of other fandoms that have their fans going on strong years later, that people still write fan fictions about. So I was thinking, what shows, games, movies, and animes are you still ardent fans of long after they've finished? What bits of media when someone says they've never seen/read it do you think "dude, you've never seen [blank]!? You don't know what you're missing!" I'll list some of my own here, trying to limit myself to two max for each. Hopefully introducing people to some new things.
Cartoons:
Ed, Edd, N' Eddy: Wanna feel like a kid again? Want to get that feeling of hanging out with your friends when you didn't really have anything else to worry about? When the school bully and your grades were the biggest concerns in your life? Watch this:
M.E.G.A.S. XLR: As I've made a crossover fic here, you can probably tell I'm a fan. Want the epic of anime mecha but without the overdramitc seriousness? This is THE parody mecha show.
Anime:
Cowboy Bebop: The only anime where I recommend the dub to the sub. I don't care what anyone says, Spike Spiegel MADE Steve Blum. It's amazing how many genres that you can fit the same characters into and make it work, and yet at the same time there's a somber, defeated tone over the whole series that comes to a head at the end. And oh yeah, that intro:
Trigun: Featuring one of the most unexpected protagonists in an anime, it demonstrates the importance of kindness, but also a harsh reality of what kind of cost and all-loving hero would suffer. Despite the gags there is an underlying truth about how ideals, even good ideals, don't hold up to reality... but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to live up to them anyway.
Games:
Golden Sun: Specifically parts 1 and 2. Dark Dawn is good, but just doesn't do as well as the rest of the series. Combine classic turn based combat with Zelda style environmental puzzle solving and a class system almost as intricate as Final Fantasy V, and there's a reason this GBA (and later DS) title is still beloved by its fans.
(Yes, I am aware of the irony of having a trailer for the least liked game of the series. It was the only good one I could find that shows what the game is about)
NO MORE HEROES: Despite the fact that there are now three entries into the series, one released just a few months ago, this series is still rather unknown by quite a few. I think Yahtzee said it best "Flawed as it is, get it anyway because you will never experience anything like it." The only thing I can say is get the Wii version, because the 360 and PS3 are inferior in every way. Yes, even in graphics and framerate.
Movies:
The Terminator/Terminator 2: Judgement Day: Mark Twain once said "A classic is something that everyone wants to have read, and no one wants to read." I know there's no one out there who doesn't know "The Terminator" is, there's problem no one out there that doesn't know what the big twist of the second movie is, there's probably no one who hasn't heard the lines "I'll be back", "Come with me if you want to live" and "Hasta la vista, baby." And yet I'm consistently surprised at how many people haven't seen the movies who know all that. If you ever happen to be channel surfing (a rarity perhaps today) drop everything and watch it. Hell, go online and find it. And you really can't watch one without the other.
Halloween: I still contend that this one of the greatest Horror/Slasher movies of all time because of how much it did with so little. How many standards it set, and how amazingly it sets up atmosphere and builds tension. This movie will never not be good, no matter how much film has progressed over the years. Just watch it.
So, got any of your own to share?
