Random Superhero Thoughts: Thor and She-Hulk... Ship it? · 8:58pm Dec 30th, 2018
Recently in the new Avengers comic, which is pretty good, She-Hulk got a major power upgrade from a dying Celestial. That being she can take in more gamma radiation. That leads to her basically being well Hulk sized
And more or less speaking like well classic Hulk. Jason Aaron did this, as he put it, to put an end to the idea that She-Hulk somehow has less power than Hulk despite the fact Marvel constantly states they have the same power set. And unlike that....
Stupid Gray She-Hulk phase, she's actually enjoying the power up and is having fun with the fact she can beat bad guys usually out of her range.
But moving on, this comic also ships Thor and good old Jennifer Walters.
However I feel like... Something is missing and it goes back to an issue with modern Thor in particular. And that issue is one of Thor and Donald Blake.
I think this romance with Jen shows it even more that Thor was made with the idea to be a mirror to the Hulk. Instead of a man becoming a monster... A man becoming a god. Hell, Stan himself said that one of the factors behind Thor was, to make a guy who could HONESTLY out muscle the Hulk most of the time, so the only way to go that far was a god.
With the whole thing of Jen not being able to REALLY control herself in her Hulk form? Don and Thor could honestly be of USE there. Since much like Jen and She-Hulk... They are one and the same. Thor is the god, the warrior, the protector of humanity while Donald Blake is the heart, the soul, the very HEROIC ESSENCE of Thor just in human form. I just always liked that dynamic with Thor and I think it ADDS to his character rather than detract like people LOVE to claim it does. I mean hell even THIS COMIC outright says Thor loved his time as Donald Blake.
While it's still not a full on split personality with Jen, it's more of her becoming more brutish and less intelligent with the classic She-Hulk snark even shining through the Hulk-speak, I think it'd add more dimensions to the relationship and hell even have more common ground.
But that's just me. Thoughts?
Where is Donald Blake now anyway?
4988171 Hasn't really factored in since Siege and writers just forgot that JMS reestablished the Donald/Thor dynamic in his run... AKA the run that brought Thor back from the dead post Civil War.
I mean some go
"Oh well that's too confusing! Why does Thor need a secret identity?!"
And to that I say it's less because he needs one and more because well, to paraphrase from Superman a little
"Living in the mundane gives a greater appreciation and point of view for the fantastic"
Thor was made to live as a mortal to learn humility, so Thor continuing to do so out of his own sense of self just makes sense. As for the confusing part, it's not really confusing until you step back and realize it's not Thor having a split personality exactly. Don Blake is Thor and Thor is Don Blake. Blake is literally what Thor WOULD BE LIKE if he was born as a human. Two halves of the same person. In the same way Jen and She-Hulk are the same person, even know, just different sides.
You know you're too into the MCU when you forget Donald Blake was an actual staple of Thor for decades. Literally took me a few moments to remember who he was.
I really like the idea. And it may be ripping off what MCU did with Hulk and Black Widow but I would find it adorable if it was Donald that was the aspect that calmed She-Hulk back into Jen, though more by calming her/reminding her of her more human side rather than hypnotism.
4988360 Well keep in mind Jen enjoys the power up, despite the lack of control, with the first issue of Avengers more than implying she's still largely guiding her Hulk form even if not directly in control like she used to be. It's literally her... Just with less intelligence and more amped up aggression.
